View Full Version : Adopt a National Anthem for a day

If you had a once in a lifetime chance to choose our National Anthem for one day only, what would you choose.

I think Sabotage by the Beastie Boys would be a bit of a laugh at a match with 80,000 singing it and hopping around. Not very patriotic or meaningful. Awful choice really but heah!

Rolf Harris - Two Little Boys. It would confuse so many people, in particular it would confuse Rolf Harris

HR Puffinstuff theme tune.

It's got it all ...narrative, idealism, romanticism, drama, peril, heroism, valour, redemption, ingroup loyalty/outgroup hostility ...and a crackin' tune.

My Lovely Horse by Fr Ted Crilly and Fr Dougal Maguire.

It's perfect, everyone knows the words and to have 70 or so thousand singing it in unison will pysch out our opposition.

This actually came up in pub discussion in Longford one time. We (a mix of UCD and Town fans) came up with My Lovely Horse on the basis of the camera panning across Robbie Keane before the World Cup Final as he says "Hold on, I can get this!"

Edit - Pauro was one of those in the pub at the time. ;)

I'd choose the Italian National Anthem. It's jaunty, and fun, cannot be heard without a smirk on your face, and every time you hear it played before a match, the camera will always pick out some stunning women in the crowd.

The Welsh National Anthem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wRRY8eDMSY) puts fire in the belly!

The Scottish National Anthem (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VJ1ONnyiPqw) sung by Ronnie Brown vs Italy was the best version of a National Anthem ever.

Both of them put Amhráin na Bhfian and Ireland's Call to shame.

Gotta be Irish ;

U2, Lizzy or Cranberries (Zombie)

Or if we can steal someone else's then it has to be the Marseillaise.

Out of actual national anthems the German and Italian one's are good.
Out of other songs... Go West by the Pet Shop Boys or Vanilla Ice's Ice Ice Baby  :D

Germany's is based on one written by Joseph Haydn. I remember having a neighbour called Joe Hayden in my youth. Clearly it is an Irish name, so should we not claim back that anthem as one of our own?

Ireland, Ireland Úberalles!

There is one problem, I can just imagine 40,000 people standing and messing up
`Deutschland, Deutschland über alles,
Über alles in der Welt`
into
`Ireland, Ireland, Umbrellas,
Umbrellas in the wet`

Marxman- Ship Ahoy :)

A thousand cultures stolen ships that came sailing
Sighted from the shoreline people stood waiting
But armies came invading and raiding to conquer
Understood nothing of a land that stood longer
But might was much stronger than right could ever be
Took away the land planned a new destiny
Butchery and murder and still I say murder
Butchery and murder and still I say murder

Wait! Hold up cos Phrase will break the mould
Culture growing stronger aging never old
Death accelerating, and I don't want to die
Fish hooked by a ship, Lord take me where I lie
Gone where the lucky ones, disease or suicide
The pride of survivors to cry for those that died
To resurrect the status and overcome the ploy
No bells or beads to barter for this young black boy

Ship ahoy
Lord take me where I lie, don't let my children die
Ship ahoy
Lord take me where I lie, don't let my children die

Gone are the days now the ships cease to sail
I don't think so what does a wage entail
Nine of five slavery or a twenty four seven
Most slaves tricked by the promise of a heaven
Controlled by the sound of a whip that goes sack
Mind - forged manacles make sure there's no slack
Think your not a slave, cos no whip marks your back
Now a bureaucrat wields the nine tails of the cat

Ain't nothing changed but the weather the song remains the same
Hollis comes left set up upon the Lamebrain
You can't tame the beast, the beast can't be changed
Have to smash the system, wisdom rearranged
Slavery claimed to be histories mystery
Wished it could be....It's still part of we
Search and look around my birthplace is torn
But England has fallen dusk negates dawn

Ship ahoy
Lord take me where I lie, don't let my children die
Ship ahoy
Lord take me where I lie, don't let my children die

Ship ahoy, ship ahoy, now they call it perestroika
Mandela's free but still can't stop the slaughter
Now they call it free trade, free choice for all
But the real freedom is ten per cent small
Freedom is a song which the caged bird sings
They keep the key all we see is the keyring
Fooled by the glisten, but the glisten is not gold
And I will not buy the beads that I'm sold

I stand here stand clear truth be my witness
How many Hitlers before you see the litmus
Test I won't rest, slave who won't behave
And no I want not the freedom of the slave
If the East wants the beast let the beast roam
Cos in the East the death of the beast was sown
You can fool the people that they're equal
But you won't fool me with a sequel

You know, I'd kind of like to see the Number 1 Army Band strike that up with 50,000 people singing along in the stands, while the camera goes close up on Robbie, Shay, etc, standing firm, serious and singing the words with that pre-match intensity.

There's currently a TV ad to the tune of "We're Jammin".

The geezer is singing "We're Roamin'".

See what he's done there?

Anyway, myself and my one year old son would like to nominate "We're Roamin" as the new national anthem.

Ja Bless.

The Rathlin Bog?

A shot a verse before the match, and so long as we're not playing some former Soviet country, we'll be grand!
