Just when I thought the Garda couldn't get any more incompetent they come up with this (http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/0630/roads.html)

Holy ****! When did the gardaí take over Kildare county council? How will this coup be dealt with by Brian Cowen? Is this the challenge of his career?

Mores to the point who the hell do Kildare County Council think they are. not only impersonating a member of the Gardai but impersonating his vehicle as well. or maybe the Gardai knew about it and were involved in the decision to use the stupid things

I think its a great idea, its cheap , it slows people down and the cardboard cops dont issue tickets or points.

BTW: I have seen a new low, the last few mornings the cops have been pulling cars on the northbound approach to the port tunnel as the cars are slowing down anyway , this is in addition to the white van with a camera pointing out the back window which seems to be permanently parked on under the bridges in the 80k zone on the M1 between the tunnel and the ariport this must be a great cash cow as it certanly doesnt slow many people down.

Yes - But I'd bet that their cars where pointing the right way. thats the incompetence I was talking about. when placed in the Layby of a road with the printed side facing oncoming traffic the car and the copper with the camera are pointing away from the road.

They do it here in Florida on the interstates. Real unoccupied police car , facing oncoming traffic at a slight angle. Sometimes they'll have a mannequin in it. It certainly slows people down.

I'd say you would've slowed down by then though. I don't mind anything that appears to be visible policing - it's the sneaky hide behind the hedge to catch people nonsense (as londonred outlines) that annoys me. Prevention much better than convictions. Same as with drink driving - they should be hitting the pub and club car parks before people get into cars, or setting up at the car park exits.

I agree with everything you say in your post macy. has the lack of Garda resources hit such a critical level that we now have cardbord cut-outs instead of real coppers

Pity they don't focus much on public order.

How long are they going to last before they're smashed to pieces? Or defaced in some way? Drunk folk will be nicking them and putting them in the neighbour's garden for a laugh. I'd love to be there to be part of it.

Maybe Dublin City Council will get cardboard cutout Gardai for the streets?

Kildare County Council are some idiots. I love the quote where they defend them by saying they are not cardboard but wooden as if that makes a difference.

Speeding fines are all about revenue generation, always have & always will be. Amazing how every new Minister for Justice denies it but any Guard will tell you they have quotes for fines.

I love the quote where they defend them by saying they are not cardboard but wooden as if that makes a difference. In fairness, the guy was probably asked if cardboard cut-outs were likely to blow away or something and the journalist put the quote into the story out of context to make him look silly.

They pulled 4 cars in a row in. Speed limit drops from 80 to 50 just in front of the toll plaza. Shooting fish in a barrel and an easy way to hit targets.

I don't think there going to be left near estates in city centers, they will be put out on the main roads and i can't see many families out the country doing anything like that around there area's!

Exactly. It's not like the one they already have has been nicked every other week, is it?

This cardboard cut-out idea has been used in the UK in the past as well.
Apparantly it does work because when drivers see it at first they slow down, but only realise when they get closer that its not real, but it has already had the desired effect.
It needs to be moved around regularly cos obviously if its always in the same place it will fool nobody. The real deal should be parked there every so often too just to keep us on our toes.

I've driven by it a few times over the past week. Everyone slows down.
