There was no need for an apology, I wasn't trying to be critical in any way... sounds like you're a Bobcat, so you'll appreciate this... a few months back kids from a creche in New York told their parents that an old man came to visit the creche that day and he sang them some nursery rhymes and also taught them how to sing F/Young... turned out the old man was Bob and one of the kids in the creche is Jesse Dylan's son....

whats your fav dylan song?
currently for me its "shes your lover now" and "thunder on the mountain"
but changes every week.:)

btw MM I always wanted to call my child dylan....its just I dont have a child! :)

Impossible to pick just one...but today my top 3 are

1. Simple twist of fate.
2. She belongs to me.
3. Tomorrow is a long time.

hmmmm.... looking at my choice above it's kinda worrying that tomorrow is my wedding anniversary...wonder is something weird going on in my sub-conscious

She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She's got everything she needs,
She's an artist, she don't look back.
She can take the dark out of the nighttime
And paint the daytime black.

You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees.
You will start out standing
Proud to steal her anything she sees.
But you will wind up peeking through her keyhole
Down upon your knees.

She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She never stumbles,
She's got no place to fall.
She's nobody's child,
The Law can't touch her at all.

She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.
She wears an Egyptian ring
That sparkles before she speaks.
She's a hypnotist collector,
You are a walking antique.

Bow down to her on Sunday,
Salute her when her birthday comes.
Bow down to her on Sunday,
Salute her when her birthday comes.
For Halloween give her a trumpet
And for Christmas, buy her a drum.

The last two lines in each verse are brilliant...

and for the day thats in it...

I left you on the debris
at the Sunday morning market
you were sorting through the odds and ends
you was looking for a bargin

I heard your footsteps at the front door
and that old familiar love song
'cause you knew you'd find me waiting there
at the top of the stairs

I wouldn't of went back
just to see how far it was
and you looked shocked to tell me
but I had to love her myself

there's more trouble at the depot
with the general workers union
and they said they'll never change a thing
well, they won't fight and their not working

oh you was my hero
hell you are my good friend
I've been there and back
and I know how far it is

but I left you on the Debris
now we both know you got no money
and I wonder what you would have done
without me hanging around

The Hip and the Smiths have both been mentioned

so I will lump for the Pogues and their song
"Thousands are sailing"

the island it is silent now
But the ghosts still haunt the waves
And the torch lights up a famished man
Who fortune could not save

Did you work upon the railroad
Did you rid the streets of crime
Were your dollars from the white house
Were they from the five and dime

Did the old songs taunt or cheer you
And did they still make you cry
Did you count the months and years
Or did your teardrops quickly dry

Ah, No, says he 'twas not to be
On a coffin ship I came here
And I never even got so far
That they could change my name

Thousands are sailing
Across the Western Ocean
To a land of opportunity
That some of them will never see
Fortune prevailing
Across the Western Ocean
Their bellies full
And their spirits free
They'll break the chains of poverty
And they'll dance
In Manhattan's desert twilight
In the death of afternoon
We stepped hand in hand on Broadway
Like the first man on the moon

And "The Blackbird" broke the silence
As you whistled it so sweet
And in Brendan Behan's footsteps
I danced up and down the street

Then we said goodnight to Broadway
Giving it our best regards
Tipped our hats to Mister Cohan
Dear old Times Square's favourite bard

Then we raised a glass to J.F.K.
And a dozen more besides
When I got back to my empty room
I suppose I must have cried

Thousands are sailing
Again across the ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery
Postcards we're mailing
Of sky-blue skies and oceans
From rooms the daylight never sees
Where lights don't glow on Christmas trees

But we dance to the music
And we dance
Thousands are sailing
Across the Western Ocean
Where the hand of opportunity
Draws tickets in a lottery

Where e'er we go, we celebrate
The land that makes us refugees
From fear of Priests with empty plates
From guilt and weeping effigies
And we dance

this song always leaves me misty eyed

..and your post sent me back to my ipod to play the song only to realise its probably one of the few that isnt on it!:(
Have placated myself by listening to "Just Like Tom Thumbs Blues" ....

When you're lost in the rain in Juarez
And it's Eastertime too
And your gravity fails
And negativity don't pull you through
Don't put on any airs
When you're down on Rue Morgue Avenue
They got some hungry women there
And they really make a mess outa you

Now if you see Saint Annie
Please tell her thanks a lot
I cannot move
My fingers are all in a knot
I don't have the strength
To get up and take another shot
And my best friend, my doctor
Won't even say what it is I've got

Sweet Melinda
The peasants call her the goddess of gloom
She speaks good English
And she invites you up into her room
And you're so kind
And careful not to go to her too soon
And she takes your voice
And leaves you howling at the moon

Up on Housing Project Hill
It's either fortune or fame
You must pick up one or the other
Though neither of them are to be what they claim
If you're lookin' to get silly
You better go back to from where you came
Because the cops don't need you
And man they expect the same

Now all the authorities
They just stand around and boast
How they blackmailed the sergeant-at-arms
Into leaving his post
And picking up Angel who
Just arrived here from the coast
Who looked so fine at first
But left looking just like a ghost

I started out on burgundy
But soon hit the harder stuff
Everybody said they'd stand behind me
When the game got rough
But the joke was on me
There was nobody even there to call my bluff
I'm going back to New York City
I do believe I've had enough

(Neil Finn) Crowded House - Fall At Your Feet

Im really close tonight
And I feel like Im moving inside her
Lying in the dark
And I think that Im beginning to know her
Let it go
Ill be there when you call

And whenever I fall at your feet
Do/You let your tears rain down on me
Whenever I touch your slow turning pain

You're hiding from me now
There's something in the way that you're talking
Words dont sound right
But I hear them all moving inside you, go
Ill be waiting when you call

Hey and whenever I fall at your feet
Wont you let your tears rain down on me
Whenever I touch your slow turning pain

The finger of blame has turned upon itself
And Im more than willing to offer myself
Do you want my presence or need my help
Who knows where that might lead
I fall

Whenever I fall at your feet
Would you let your tears rain down on me
Whenever I fall, ever I fall......

Frank Sinatra - Winners

Here's to the winners - lift up the glasses .
Here's to the glory still to be.
Here's to the battle, whatever it's for,
To ask the best of ourselves, then give much more.

Here's to the heroes - those who move mountains.
Here's to the miracles they make us see.
Here's to all brothers - here's to all people
Here's to the winners all of us can be.

Here's to the heroes - those who move mountains.
Here's to the miracles they make us see.
Here's to all brothers - here's to all people
Here's to the winners all of us can be.

To Win Just Once - Saw Doctors

To win just once would be enough
For those who’ve lost in life and love
For those who’ve lost their guile and nerve
Their innocence, their drive and verve
For those who feel they’ve been mistreated
Discriminated, robbed or cheated
To claim one victory inspired
To win just once is their desire

To win just once against the odds
And once be smiled on by the Gods
To race with speed along the track
Break the tape and not look back
To never have considered losing
As if to win is by your choosing
Bare you soul for all to find
An honest heart and an open mind

To Win just once
That would be enough
So come all ye fulltime smalltown heroes
Cast away your inbred fears of
Standing out from all the rest
The cynics and the pessimists
The self-indulgent almost rich
The blatant hurlers on the ditch
Time is passing so come on
And face the ball, the game is on

What's the matter with your life?
Is the poverty bringing you down?
Is the mailman jerking you around?
Did he put your million dollar cheque in someone else's box?
Tell me: What's the matter with your world?
Was it a boy when you wanted a girl?
Don't you know straight hair ain't got no curl?
Life it ain't real funky unless it's got that pop, dig it.

Pop life.
Everybody needs a thrill.
Pop life.
We all got our space to fill.
Pop life.
Everybody can't be on top.
Life it ain't real funky unless it's got that pop.

Tell me: What's it underneath your hair?
Is there anybody living there?
Can't get over if you say you just don't care.
Show me a boy who stays in school and I'll show you a boy aware.

Pop life.
Everybody needs a thrill.
Pop life.
We all got our space to fill.
Pop life.
Everybody can't be on top.
Life it ain't real funky unless it's got that pop.

What you putting in your nose?
Is that where all your money goes?
The river of addiction flows if it gets hot
But there won't be no water when the fire blows.

Pop life.
Everybody needs a thrill.
Pop life.
We all got our space to fill.
Pop life.
Everybody can't be on top.
Life it ain't real funky unless it's got that pop.

"Pop Life", Prince.

She said: "I know the drummer, can you let me in?
Tell the guitar player I brought a friend.
Ask the roadies do they need a hand.
Tell the manager there's a girl named Jen."

The doorman said: No head, no backstage pass.

Not by the hairs of my chinny-chin-chin.
If you ain't giving head, you ain't getting in.

The doorman said: No head, no backstage pass.

"No Head, No Backstage Pass", Funkadelic.

Chris Rea, ' I ain't the fool here'

I may look like a stranger with nothing to say
Silent in the corner while you're talking away
Your theories are endless, your lips never sleep
No time for reflection, there's no tongue in your cheek

Oh no, I ain't fool here
Oh no, I ain't fool here

The muscles in your mouth must be stronger than steel
You can talk till forever but ain't got no feel
Your scull must be empty, your brain cells run dry
Calling everybody
Learning nothing till the day that you die

Oh no, I ain't fool here
Oh no, I ain't fool here

I've always found the lyrics to this song really inspiring....

Muse "Butterflies And Hurricanes"

change,
everything you are
and everything you were
your number has been called
fights, battles have begun
revenge will surely come
your hard times are ahead

best,
you've got to be the best
you've got to change the world
and you use this chance to be heard
your time is now

change,
everything you are
and everything you were
your number has been called
fights and battles have begun
revenge will surely come
your hard times are ahead

best,
you've got to be the best
you've got to change the world
and you use this chance to be heard
your time is now

don't,
let yourself down
don't let yourself go
your last chance has arrived

best,
you've got to be the best
you've got to change the world
and you use this chance to be heard
your time is now

I love crowded house/split endz/finn borthers....
If you can find it anywhere I would recommend Neil Finns live solo version of "Message to my girl"
not the youtube one as it is too crackly...

I don't want to say I love you
That would give away too much
(it's) Hip to be detached and precious
The only thing you feel is vicious

I don't wanna say I want you
Even though I want you so much
It's wrapped up in conversation
It's whispered in a hush
Though I'm frightened by the word
Think it's time that it was heard

No more empty self-possession
Vision swept under the mat
It's no new years resolution
It's more than that

And now I wake up happy
Warm in a lovers embrace
No one else can touch us
While we're in this place
So I'll sing it to the world
This simple message to my girl

No more empty self-possession
Vision swept under the mat
It's no new years resolution
It's more than that
--
Though I'm frightened by the word
Think it's time I made it heard
So I sing it to the world
Simple message to my girl

No more empty self-possession
Vision swept under the mat
It's no new years resolution
It's more than that

No there's nothing quite as real
As a touch of your sweet hand
I can't spend the rest of my life
Buried in the sand.

Seeing as we're of an antipodean bent at the moment, The Go-Between's have to get a mention, some wonderful use of.. words, and, you know, talkin' about things and that.

The Wrong Road
When the rain hit the roof
With the sound of a finished kiss
Like a lip lifted from a lip
I took the wrong road round

Dusty In Here
Like a ghost, a ghost of something old
It's cold and dusty in here
It's in your hand, it sits just like a glove
The finger traces the lines of love
It's cold and dusty in here
Someone you knew is watching you
I'm someone you knew

The Clarke Sisters
They had problems with their father's law,
They sleep in the back of a feminist bookstore,
The Clarke Sisters.
The eldest sister keeps a midnight vigil,
The youngest sister she's not spiritual,
The Clarke Sisters.
Their steel grey hair, their lovely steel grey hair,
The Clarke Sisters.
Why don't I introduce you
I'm sure they won't mind.
But don't you dare, laugh at their collections
Handed down, handed down for love.

and best of the lot, one of the best songs ever written:

Bye Bye Pride
A white moon appears like a hole in the sky,
The mangroves go quiet.
In La Brisa de la Palma a teenage rasputin
Takes the sting from a gin.
When a woman learns to walk she’s not dependent anymore
A line from her letter, May 24,
And out on the bay the current is strong,
A boat can go lost.

But I didn’t know someone
Could be so lonesome
Didn’t know a heart
Could be tied up and held for ransom.
So take your shoes and go outside, stride over stride.
Walk to that tide, 'cos the door is open wide.

Turned the fan off and went for a walk
By the lights down on Shields Street.
The birds in the trees open their wings ...
He goes home again.
He dreams resistance, they talk commitment,
Things change over long distance.
Took the shirt off his back, the eyes from his head
And left him for dead.

But I didn’t know someone
Could be so lonesome
Didn’t know a heart
Could be tied up
And held for ransom.
So take your shoes and go outside, stride over stride,
Walk to that tide, 'cos the door is open wide.

Little lies, they’ll take your pride.
Littie lies, they'll take your pride.

So take your shoes and go outside, stride over stride,
Walk to that tide, 'cos the door is open wide.
Stride over stride
Walk to that tide.
Bye, bye pride.
'Cos the door is open wide.
The door is always open wide.
The door is always open wide.

Johnny Cash
The beast in me Is caged by frail and fragile bars Restless by day And by night rants and rages at the stars God help the beast in me
The beast in me Has had to learn to live with pain And how to shelter from the rain And in the twinkling of an eye Might have to be restrained God help the beast in me
Sometimes it tries to kid me That it's just a teddy bear And even somehow manage to vanish in the air And that is when I must beware Of the beast in me that everybody knows They've seen him out dressed in my clothes Patently unclear It it's New York or New Year God help the beast in me
The beast in me

No problem, always a pleasure making people cry :D

And a lyrical contribution from Billy Joel's Movin' Out (anthony's Song)

Anthony works in the grocery store
Savin' his pennies for someday
Mama Leone left a note on the door,
She said,
"Sonny, move out to the country"
Workin' too hard can give me
A heart attack(-ack-ack-ack..)
You oughta know by now
Who needs a house out in Hackensack?
Is that all you get with your money?

It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
If that's movin' up then I'm movin' out.

Sergeant O'Leary is walkin' the beat
At night he becomes a bartender
He works at Mister Cacciatore's down
On Sullivan Street
Across from the medical center
He's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillac(-ac-ac-ac..)
You oughta know by now
And if he can't drive
With a broken back
At least he can polish the fenders

It seems such a waste of time
If that's what it's all about
If that's movin' up then I'm movin' out.

You should never argue with a crazy mind(-mind-mind-mind..)
You oughta know by now
You can pay Uncle Sam with overtime
Is that all you get for your money?

and if thats what you have in mind
and If that's what your all about
If that's movin' up then I'm movin' out.

Speaking of Nick Lowe

As I walk through, this wicked world
Searching for light in the darkness of insanity
I ask myself, is all hope lost
Is there only pain and hate and misery
But each time I feel like this inside, there's one thing I wanna know
Whats so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

And as I walk on, through troubled times
My spirit gets so downhearted sometimes
So where are the strong, and who are the trusted
And where is the harmony
Cos each time I fell it slipping away, just makes me wanna cry
Whats so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

The Hold Steady - Constructive Summer

Incredibly uplifting lyrics

Me and my friends are like
the drums on "Lust for Life"
we pound it out on floor toms
our psalms are sing-a-long songs

And this whole town is like this
and now we all haul ashes
work at the mill until you die
work at the mill and then you die
we're gonna build something this summer
(gonna build something this summer)
we'll put it back together
raise up a giant ladder
with love and trust and friends and hammers
(this summer)

We're gonna lean this ladder
up against the water tower
climb up to the top
and drink and talk
(this summer)

Me and my friends are like
'doublewhiskeycokenoice'
we drink along in double time
I drink too much, but we feel fine

We're gonna build something this summer
(gonna build something this summer)
summer grant us all the power
to drink on top of water towers
with love and trust that shows all summer
let this be my annual reminder
that we can all be something bigger

I went to your schools
I did my detention but the walls are so grey I couldn't pay attention
I read the gospel it moved me to tears
but I couldn't mind the hate and couldn't find the fear
I met your savior I knelt at his feet
and he took my ten bucks and went down the street
tried to believe all the things you said
my friends that aren't dying are already dead

Raise a toast to saint Joe Strummer
I think he might have been our only decent teacher
getting older only makes it harder to remember
we are our only saviors
we're gonna build something this summer
