Now whether his gross was worked out so that he'd have a certain amount into his hand based on his allowances I don't know but I'd doubt it.
You wouldn't exactly have to be a tax genius to work it out in fairness.

Maybe so. Obviously the culture was traditionally all about net wages but I know in our club, which to be fair hasn't always been a shining example of how to do things, all wages are paid gross without any real consideration of how much they would be getting into their hand from the club, and the player or staff member can either take it or leave it.
