Well lads, ive been talking to Keith O Dwyer about fundraisers and he would like an opinion on this idea from the real fans. The only thing is what can we do to make a profit out of this ? So he'd just like your opinion on this one. To get the idea across we need a good way to get the word around.

I presume people would pay to play. What about a mixed team, as in not strictly Rovers V the locals/fans, but instead both teams are a mix of locals/fans and players.

Maybe the persons who contribute the most to play would have the opportunity of picking which Rovers players play on each team.

i.e. Like playing football in school and the two “captains” pick the Rovers players they wish to have on their team.

Just a thought.

He's open to any opinion and its not a bad one about mixed teams.

Mixing the teams would seem a more logical idea. Firstly you get to play with and against rovers players, also an all rovers team would just runaway with the game. i know its only a laugh but it be good to play in a close game.
Love Only1rovers idea bout picking the teams using 2 captains, that would get a lot of laughs.
As a way of geting the word around you could have a draw in some of the local pubs, offices, factories around town with one person then representing their company, pub etc. That way people wouldnt mind paying an entrance fee to see their buddy playing.

They should do a weeks training with the locals and get someone like Billy Sinclair to manage the fans and pick out who impressed the most and should play. But Keith said he wants opinions so would you play in it or not ? hopefully its positive opinions.

A bit like Sky's 'The Match', yes?

To be honest i can't see it being a major money spinner ! but just my opinion.

no this would not be a money spinner. no disrespect to keith. we will have to come up with something different and better. get your thinking caps on

sligofan4ever
30/06/2008, 9:39 PM
Well we need to get thinking soon. The match was only an idea but since it wouldnt a big money spinner this thread should be open to ideas.

Is it possible we can get a premiership team over. If first teams can surely we can. Or even a team like Leeds.

Suppose thats out of question then. We'll probably need something special if Rovers are to get good money out of something. Have we ever done anything in recent years that gained alot of money for Rovers ? we definetly need to get thinking Rovers need the money.

With regard to a 'locals vs Rovers' game - as we dont have any money surely if it raised money at no cost then its a good idea?

If 16 pubs in sligo were told that they could nominate one player for a charge of €500 and have it managed by a local to keep costs down, rovers could play the match midweek - as a practice for them. i'm sure that a decent crowd would turn up as it would be to see their reprentative play especially if it was priced competitively say €7 per adult! €8k for the sponsored team and if 500 turned up you would have €3500 gate receipts = €11.5k for not much outlay - every little helps!

Exactly. We've always been looking for a big fundraiser but it is impossible to find one.

I'd guess selling Faz for €20k and the Liverpool Legends game didn't even pay a months wages and they are two significent amounts. This game could be an idea, even if it only raised a couple of grand. Every little bit is important...

Haven't we not played Athlone town already this season?:)

IMO a match between the Gah and ourselves would attract a bit of interest.
One half play Gaelic and the other half play footie. Add the 2 scores to find the winner.
A percentage of the takings to Hospice. It's not as if they have a lot to do for the summer.
Rovers tog out in the Gah colours and visa versa.

Since the Gaelic team are out of Connaught and the panel arent too interested in the the Timmy Murphy competition, Rovers out of both their cups maybe Cookie could field a team to fill the void.

How many fans would go to one with GAH compared to one against locals ? suppose it would depend how many gaelic fans are in Sligo.

Brilliant idea!!!!!!!!!!!!

What about a home and away fixture ie Showgrounds teams play soccer, Markievicz teams play GAA. Aggretate scores to decide winner. A very novel idea. Both codes would benifit and even the charity as suggested.

As I say a brilliant idea

Didn't the Gah turndown a simple invitation to parade the trophy in the Showgies last season?

Why would they accept this?

And yours you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

About 6,000 fans travelled to Castlebar for championship semi final, how many of those do you think we would get for a mickey mouse type game in the Showgrounds? And with some of the money going to charity and some of it going to the GAA what will be left in the pot for us? And if they would parade the cup in the showgrounds last year why do you think they would play a game against us.

A concert at the Showgrounds would be a massive money spinner imo. Have as many Sligo bands/singers as possible from Westlife to Dervish(:o). Also John Colleary, a Sligo comedian and any other acts interested.

I know Longford Town are running one of these with country and western stars.

Does Meat Loaf have relations in the Sligo area? We could bill it as 'The Welcome Home Meat Loaf' gig !

imagine how many people you would get to go see westlife for 15 quid :p. The concert for save cancer service in sligo had some good music we should get some of those who participated in it and some other musicians from around the country.

i think the rovers vs sligo is a great idea, good few players on the sligo team were decent soccer players in the day, kelly, johnny davey, mcnamara, and brehony,im sure lads like this would be well intrested in helping out the rovers, surely worth an approach.
approachin westlife would be a good idea, didnt they sponser a few underage kits a few years ago?
don't know if they'd do it considering there fiasco in salthill last week!

Exactly, even if it raised a few hundred euro wouldn't it pay one player for a week. I doubt it'd cost much, if anything to organise, so I can't be a bad idea.

And one person posted on this thread if each pub nominated one player for about 500 euro which would be 16 players thats 8,500 euro plus people who come to see it. It dosent cost much to organise and it makes a good profit for us.

Lads, every year we talk about fundraisers, but there's no point in talking about it on the internet and then doing nothing about it.
