Vikings reclaim top spot

Monaghan United 0-2 Dublin City
Two second half goals helped Dublin City to victory over a poor Monaghan United side at Century Homes Park on Sunday evening, in the process seeing John Gill’s side back to the top of the First Division table, which they relinquished a week ago.

The first half was a forgettable affair, neither side capable of really stamping their authority on the game, played in an insipid atmosphere at the Monaghan venue.

The home side failed to really threaten, and once the Vikings took a 54th minute lead, a comeback was always unlikely from Bobby Browne’s struggling Mons.

Wesley Byrne was the architect and the executor of the first goal, ending a long solo run with a quick one-two before beating Anthony Fennelly in the home goal.

Byrne came close to adding a second but saw his shot cannon off the woodwork, before Robbie Collins - only on as a substitute a matter of a minute or so - added his side’s second ten minutes from time.
