Zayed sends Bray to summit

Bray Wanderers 3-2 Kildare County
Eamon Zayed capped a memorable week by grabbing a late winner from the penalty spot against promotion rivals Kildare County at the Carlisle Grounds on Friday night and send the Seagulls to the top of the First Division table.

Zayed, a virtual certainty for the Irish under-20 squad that will contest the World Youth Cup finals before Christmas, made his under-21 international debut during the 5-1 victory in Poland last Tuesday night.

And he held his nerve to beat Kildare keeper Tadgh Murphy four minutes from time after he himself had been fouled by County captain Ben Whelehan.

It completed a come-from-behind win for the Seagulls, who had taken an early lead through Wesley Charles.

The big defender scored his first goal for Bray in the 13th minute, getting on the end of a loose ball in the area after Robbie McGuinness’s corner had not been dealt with by the County rearguard.

Kildare struck back well, and led by the 36th minute through goals from right back Damien Brennan and midfielder Alan McNevin, the second after a contested corner awarded by referee Paul McKeon.

The home side levelled just before the interval, McGuinness grabbing his second goal in as many games after an astute pass from Colm Tresson.

Barry O’Connor and Ray Scully came close to giving the Newbridge side the lead after the interval, but young Bray keeper Chris O’Connor was equal to their efforts, and Zayed sent his side the top of the table with his late winner from the spot.
