Holt rescues Derry

Waterford United 1-1 Derry City
A stunning equaliser against the run of play from Derry City striker Michael Holt salvaged a valuable point for Dermot Keely’s Candystripes at the RSC on Friday night.

Holt was Keely’s first signing after the manager joined from Kildare County last month, and has already begun to repay that faith.

Derry looked certain to be heading for their eighth defeat of the league season, and their third reverse in eight days following recent defeats in the Uefa Cup and FAI Cup, when Holt intervened on 72 minutes.

He intercepted a weak pass out of the home defence, and sent a powerful drive high past Dan Connor in the Waterford goal for the leveller.

To that point, the Blues had been the better side, and deserved their 66th minute lead.

Mark Clifford struck a low drive past Alan Gough from outside the area after being teed up by new Waterford signing Neale Fenn, who had only been introduced for his debut two minutes previously.

Waterford picked up the slack from that point, and looked likely to seal another home win before Holt’s remarkable strike just six minutes later.

Waterford United: Connor, McLaughlin (Mallon, 70), Byrne, Breen, Frost, Clifford, Waters, O’Brien (Mulcahy, 33), Reilly, Murphy (Fenn, 64), Sullivan.

Derry City: Gough, McCallion, Hargan, McLaughlin, Simms (McGlynn, 72), Molyneaux, Hutton, Doherty, Martyn, Holt, Coyle (Beckett, 48).
