PREVIEW Markey set for Town debut

Athlone Town’s new signing Brendan Markey, who joined the club recently after having his contract at Dundalk terminated last week, will hope to make an instant impression on the St Mel’s Park faithful against Limerick FC this evening (Friday).

The former Millwall and Dublin City forward was dismissed along with fellow player David Nicholl by the Lilywhites after an apparently serious breach of club discipline following the game against Cobh Ramblers a fortnight ago.

He faces a difficult task at Athlone, who were relegated to last place in the First Division table for the first time this season by Kilkenny City’s draw with Markey’s old club Dundalk on Thursday night.

However, manager Jimmy Greene will be without five players for tonight’s game: goalkeeper Gary Connaughton, defender Shane Jackson and striker Steven Kelly are all injured, while young pair Damien Rush and Alan Kelly are at the World Student Games.

Limerick have won three of their last five games, their only blemishes in that spell being defeats to First Division joint-leaders Dublin City in the league and a narrow loss last weekend against Premier Division Longford Town in the Cup.

The trip to the division’s bottom side will hardly fill them with dread, but of concern is the limited number of personnel at manager Mike Kerley’s disposal – the Lims boss is still without key striker Stephen O’Flynn and long-term injury victim Gareth Cooney, while Kerley himself is also on the injured list and young Shane O’Donoghue is, like the Athlone pair, at the Student Games.

Defender Stephen O’Mahony returns to the squad after captaining the Irish under-19 side to victory over Norway on Wednesday night.
