O’Connor looking forward to Carlisle return

Kildare County’s former Bray Wanderers star Barry O’Connor is looking forward to a return visit to the Carlisle Grounds for the first time since leaving the Seagulls’ nest at the end of last season.

However his participation in the top of the table clash tonight (Friday) remains in doubt after the 31-year-old was concussed during Kildare’ win over Cherry Orchard in the FAI Cup last weekend.

The attacking midfielder spent five fruitful years in the green and white, scoring in the 1999 FAI Cup final replay as well as netting the goal that secured promotion to the top flight the following year.

“It’s going to be a strange one. I had a great five years with Bray, a lot of good memories. But like the old cliché, that goes out the window for the 90 minutes,” he told the Wicklow People.

O’Connor, who joined Wanderers from Cliftonville in1998 and scored 37 goals in 138 appearances for the club, knows there’s a lot at stake in this clash.

“It really is a big game. If we can get the three points, we go five clear of Bray and have a little gap. But they’ll go above us if they win," he pointed out.
