In a strongly worded statement, Sligo Rovers Media Officer has condemned those who were responsible for the Bit O’Red picking up another unnecessary fine.

“Sligo Rovers F.C. have been handed a €500 fine for the actions of a handful of misguided individuals at the F.A.I. cup game against Shamrock Rovers (Smoke bombs discharged and objects thrown on pitch).

“These individuals think they are Sligo Rovers supporters, but not until they stop this stupid behaviour, can they be considered so. All they are doing is costing our club valuable revenue that we badly need. A big thank-you to those real supporters who tried to identify the people responsible - if they could please contact anyone at the club to re-identify these people, it would be greatly appreciated.”

Some people are just idiots.

The chairman was told the name of this person directly after the shams game. The club know who it is, they just won't do anything about it, as usual.

What do you suggest should be done with them?
Ban them from our games and then begin a petition to get them reinstated?

In fairness, one of them approached us before the match and told us they would be letting off smoke bombs and we might like to move over a little to avoid the smoke.

Didn't recognise 'im, guv, he were wearing a balaclava - or maybe he were just ugly.

I red the article in the weekender and I'm outraged! The people traveling to the away games are real supporters!! Asking other fans to grass others up?? In all the games I went to (Feyenoord for years!), I never heard any club complaining about flairs, they even sell posters with a whole red lit stadion on it!!! I didnt even think this was illegal. I never heard any one complaining about stuff been thrown on the pitch either. You have a great fans mentality here, no fighting and no hooliganism!! Instead of apriciating this you talk about a few things been thrown on the pitch. I couldnt believe they really fine a club for that. What do they want ? no away support or everyone sitting down like in the UK and Holland? Only sell tickets to people with ID shown and all that crap?? Lets just enjoy the match and let peolple throw bog rolls if they want to!!! It's only paper!!! They dont even throw it at people!!

By writing aboout this and giving it attention you attract people that want to be writen about in the papers, it made hooliganism big!!! And I think it is nice to see a good display from the supporters, its a shame that the club gets fined for it! That should be the issue we should talk about, for the last time it's harmless (bogroll)

Waste of money people were warned enough time , fine does seem a bit ott , how much were shams fined for having a fan arrested and trying to incite a riot after the game?

It's illegal to use flares here unless you're appropriately trained and licensed. It's hardly different from fireworks. Some classes of flares are restricted for use in marine emergencies too, I think. Regardless, it's not the club's fault, and it's not the FAI's fault that these things are illegal, but they get bitched at every other week as some idiot gets his club in trouble.

It's not illegal to use them anyone can buy them over the counter without a licence. You can't be arrested for using them they are only banned from stadiums by the FAI and UEFA it not actually against the law to use them (although the cops might throw some other charge at you). Anyway I don't know why UCD supporters feel they have to post in every other clubs forum

How much did and do these fans contibute personally to Rovers?

Their financial input alone outstreches the paltry fines that the FAI hand out. The MC should quit the blame game and look upon themselves. We are not up **** creek because of smoke bombs, we are there because of mismanagement.

Have to agree with you on the blame game thing. After all this is coming from the same member of the MC who encroached onto the pitch in Galway a while back. That is showing the young fans a good example.
We saw McClout run the length of Finn Park, again when it had nothing to do with him. That was the business of Finn Harps officials.
Kettle-pot-black comes to mind when I read the MC’s statement.

But, having said that. If fans continue to let off smoke bombs and bog rolls, the club will continue to get fined. So when you pay your €15 or whatever you pay to get in to next Saturdays match, how do you feel knowing that that money is not going to the club you love. Instead, it is going into the FAI’s expenses coffers. So they can enjoy their prawn cocktails sandwiches at their next junket abroad.

The club is not in the position it now finds itself because of FAI fines, but it's obvious it's not helping the club either.

What control does Sligo Rovers FC have over people in the away section of away grounds. What stops me going to any game with a few lads and lighting a flare. Maybe I'm a neutral supporter with pyromaniac tendencies. Surely if anyone to blame its the stewards/security for allowing it to happen. Not that Im blaming them as most are just volunteers. The FAI need to cop on. Maybe they need the money to pay for landsdown road.

i cant understand the mindset of people who are costing the club money throwing these items onto the pitch.
they are not real supporters as each smoke bomb is costing the club not only their season ticket money but also another persons money.
there is no point giving out about the mc in this thread.
this is a supporters problem which has to be paid for by the mc.
stop doing this ...please.

The point I was making is that the FAI are fining clubs for harmless fun, there are never (as far as I have seen) things been thrown on the pitch while the match is on. I know this is costing the club money and therefore we should maybe not do it, but who are this people that think its necesery to fine a club for throwing bog roll? Am I do only one really enjoying a good display?? I think it makes a great atmosphere. And the second point I was making is that you have very well behaved supporters who really know what they cant and can do (a few exceptions maybe not). Giving all this attention to a few bogg rolls and smoke bombs (if you can call them that) is insane!!!! There are some power happy idiots who give the club the fine just because they can, I say F~*# them!!

I spoke to the guy and it's a bit different then everybody here says. somebody threw a flair near the guy and his son was in the smoke, so he threw it away on the pitch. The guy is gonna phone the club and is willing to pay the fine himself, I dont think this is really fair and I will chip inn too. And I wasn't even there!! Still think we should get this idiots at FAI to realise that the rovers have no influence on their supporters on away games and therefore shouldnt be fined!!

dead on.

perhaps the club should release a statement outlining what punishment people will incurr for using flares in the future and have a universal punishment accepted by all.this line of identifying the culprits and doing nothing is ridiculous.perhaps having an acknowledged punishment policy in place would make too much sense?

Fair play to the lad who is going to pay the fine and lads who will help.On the whole flare issue as I mentioned before we brought it up along with other LOI clubs at a fans forum in Abbottstown and the FAI showed us some monstrosity box set of rules that are goverened by UEFA, which includes the exclusion of flares. Now one question I have is if a flare goes of at the showgrounds and we get fined €500 is is the same amount if one goes off at the San Siro or Anfield?

At the Finn harps game a management committee member approached me and told me in the first half that 4 flares would be let off at the end of the game and if there was anything I could do as we would be fined.I did mention it to one lad that the club know that there were flares to be let off, but he was already approached by another club member.

After that I suggested that the present management members simply stand in the middle of the lads who they know would let off the flares, ask them not too and save the inevitable fine.Instead they stood in front of them looked at it happening and then did a sort of a "I told ya so"

It was also suggested that a flare dispaly be done at the Liverpool legends game as this was not an FAI sanctioned match, sort of an amnesty and the flares that were bought could be used up.Didnt happen though.

09/07/2008, 8:32 AM
Alan,
If there is a set of rules somewhere that says you cant set off flares then you either live with that or do something to change the rules-how you do that I dont know.
It is obviously the same group of lads that are setting off the flares so maybe if someone from the Management Committee or yourself as head of the Trust explain to them that it is costing the club serious money and while it does add an atmosphere it is not helping the club out at all.
If after this has been explained to the lads involved and they still continue to let them off, then they should be not allowed into the ground until they agree not to let them off.
If an away supporter lets off a flare, does the home team get fined as well?

09/07/2008, 10:30 AM
No problem I can contact FAI and get some more info from them about this. Its also contained in the UEFA license(however a lot in that that has not been fulfileld). Its not the position of the trust to say to anyone what they can or cant do its up to individuals , we have no authority to do so.
If thers anything the trust can do on this PM me or let any of the lads in the trust know.I do know that flares, smoke bombs may be let off if a qualified fire officer is present under certain conditions, but this can be expensive.

sligo1
09/07/2008, 11:25 AM
I dont understand Alan-they can either be let off or they cant.It has to be written somewhere that you cant let off flares etc or else the FAI wouldnt be in a position to fine the club.
If what you say is true that they can be let off under the supervision of a Fire Officer, isn't one of the committee a Fire Officer?I'm sure he's not going to charge.
Maybe you should drop the FAI a line and get the exact ruling etc.

I know you have no authority to tell people what to do but if somebody like you who is a figure in authority explained to these people the consequences of their actions rather than people roaring at them etc they might listen. If they dont, then it is Good Bye,I'm afraid.

I really dont understand this thread?

The club is broke!

Supporters who know the club will be fined if they let the flares off still do!

If a supporter lets a flare off, then no matter how "true" a supporter he is and how much he "loves" the club, then the fine is €500 so this is more than the whole seasons ticket revenue that this "true" fan would have given to the club he "loves" and hence by a process of simple subtraction these "true" supporters are having a negative effect on the club they supposedly "love"?

Firstly i think the rules are too restrictive personally but the rules are the rules and we should all behave in a manner that benefits the club!

We can do without idiots like this who "love" our club!!!!!

yeah and all sit down and no swearing, what a jolly good time we will have!! This supporters love the club and like to put up a good display to show the players their support. They go to all the matches and not just to the ones that are important like most people.

And rules are rules? Thats what they said in nazi germany too. I think the FAI is well out off order to fine a club for something the club has absolutly no influence over (it was an away match!!) How would you like it when you have to pay a fine coz your neighbour was speeding in galway?? You would think its unfair and would be angry with the garda not with your neighbour!!!!

The displays are always done before the match starts and never during the match. I'm not involved with any of them but do enjoy them. In europe the clubs them self have confetti canons and lots of other things. It adds to atmosphere. I know it's fairly new here but most people here have been to matches in britain or europe and must have seen it there. Did you think that it was out of order then? The Rovers need more support then they have, let get more people in the showgrounds and one way to do it is by creating an atmosphere.

Dont forget its not aimed at anyone, there is no damage done and it looks good!!

Look,I,m sure if Britney Spears or Paris Hilton ran accross the pitch naked or even still some of the committee-I'm sure that would create an atmosphere but the Club would still be fined.
You either abide by the rules or try and change the rules but it doesn't make any sense whatsoever to incur 500 euro fines when the club is under pressure finanically.

get your facts right tulip - a smoke bomb was thrown during play in the second half of the shams match.
i was down the front with my 7 year old child and it landed within 5 yards of us.
There are reasons for these rules and even if we dont like them we must adhere to them.
as sligo1 said even though we dont like speeding fines , the law is there for a valid reason and we gotta accept it.
we as supporters now have to show zero tolerance to these idiots who are costing our club much needed money at present and i think you have to accept that this is the most important issue at present.

Thanks for stating the obvious !!

If anybody knows who will be fined, for what and for where it's Sligo Rovers fans. seems we get fined after every game. regardless of atmosphere/ rule changes/ legal vs illegal debates, the facts remain the same - if you do anything with a flare or smoke bomb your club will be fined - yet some fans cant get this into their heads and continually let them off. Top professional clubs throughout europe can afford the fines - we cant - and that should be the factor taken into account before anyone brings these things into games.

Lads, the rules are the rules. Flares/bombs are illegal at games, and there is a heavy financial penalty for those that use them. People have been injured and killed by them at games in the past, and even if it hasn't happened in this country, there is a risk every time a flare goes off. Does it take a death in the crowd before someone gets a grip??

And no, there are no flares used in British grounds, for very obvious safety reasons, never mind financial penalties.
