Hawkins wins monthly award

Bohemians central defender Colin Hawkins has won the eircom/Soccer Writers Player of the Month for July, during which he made a starring contribution to the Gypsies’ Champions League First Qualifying Round defeat of Belarussian side BATE Borisov.

Former Irish underage star Hawkins, who helped Brian Kerr’s under-20s side to third place at the World Youth Cup in 1997, has become an integral part of the Bohemians rearguard since joining from Doncaster Rovers almost two years ago.

The undisputed number one central defender in a club blessed with several options in the position, Hawkins played through the pain barrier for the benefit of his side during July, helping Bohs to a 3-1 aggregate victory against BATE, and forming a solid defensive axis with Thomas Heary for the first leg of the Champions League second qualifying round tie against Rosenborg at Dalymount Park on the last day of the month.

His Achilles problem prevented him from appearing in the FAI Cup defeat of Dundalk or the league victory over Waterford United, games in which Heary and young pair Jason McGuinness and Ken Oman stood in to good effect.

Affectionately known as “the Hawk” to Bohs fans, Hawkins, who turned 26 this week, has also had spells with Coventry City and St Patrick’s Athletic in the past.
