Keegan injury not serious

The injury to Bohemians striker Paul Keegan, who was carried off during the club’s FAI Carlsberg Cup victory over Skerries Town on Friday, is not as serious as was first feared - but he will still miss up to a month of Bohs’ season.

Keegan, handed a starting role by manager Stephen Kenny after his match-winning substitute appearance against Drogheda United six days previously, was replaced after just 22 minutes of the game against the non-league side, with speculation that the injury could rule him out for much of the rest of the season.

However, after tests were carried out on his foot, it was been determined that the former Bray Wanderers man sustained soft tissue damage but, crucially, no broken bones.

The Bohs medical staff expect Keegan to be back in action in around three weeks time, which would rule him out of the champions’ next three league outings, Dublin derbies against St Patrick’s Athletic this weekend, UCD in a week’s time and against Shamrock Rovers on September 1st.

In his absence, manager Stephen Kenny is expected to give some substitute appearances to 17-year-old starlet Stephen Ward, who netted a brace on his senior debut against Skerries on Friday, despite being on the field for less than 20 minutes.
