Lynch chases cup bonus
Drogheda United captain Aidan Lynch has his eye on a bit of a financial coup in this season’s FAI Cup, in which he leads his side into battle against Bohemians at the quarter-final stage next month.
When the centre half takes the field for the last eight meeting with Bohs on September 12th, he will have more than the rivalry with brother Damien on his mind - Lynch is one of a group of Drogs players to have backed the club to win the prestigious FAI Cup at odds of 25/1!
The former UCD and Ireland under-20 defender helped his side to victory over UCD in the third round last Friday night, and will now lead the Boynesiders into battle against big guns Bohs at O2 Park in three weeks time, when he will come face-to-face with brother Damien, the Gypsies’ right back.
And while he stands to make a bit of a killing if Drogheda can go the whole way, he cites an additional reason for wanting to lift bringing the cup to the town for the first time - the ambition to lead Drogheda into European competition.
“There’s a place in the Uefa Cup for the winners, and of course everyone wants to play in Europe. It’s something every player aspires to and I would like to play on that stage,” he said.
The fact that his brother, a former Nottingham Forest and Leeds United trainee, got a taste of European football for Bohemians against Rosenberg recently is a further incentive for Lynch to succeed.
“It’s human nature that I am a little envious of what [Damien] has achieved, but there’s no reason why it can’t be Drogheda playing in the Champions League one day,” he added.
