Why is Hamilton insisting that 1-1 is a death knell for Switzerland and Turkey! Irritating.

Yeah caught that alright, for the Swiss it pretty much would have been, but at 1-1 all Turkey would have to do is beat the Czechs to go through

What happens though if the Czechs and Turkey draw. The drawing of lots is it.

I think so, their goal difference is -1 each with 2 scored and 3 let in right?

Yeah thats it. The only way they can separate them is that the Turks won their match scoring 2 goals and the Czechs won by scoring 1. But I doubt that comes into into it. That goal by Quaremsa at the end as proved vital.

Academic now. It's like when the score after the first leg of a Champions League Knockout tie is 1-1 and in the second leg the home team scores and the commentator starts saying things like " and that's it surely curtains now for away team". Bugbear of mine.

How is that the same.

Donadoni

It's the same insofar as the commentator jumps to conclusions about the effect of a scoreline. The away always needed to score one goal anyway so really not that much has changed.

Briliant Rob Curling Apres Match has made me forget all the previous irritation though.

Eh, but the goal by Quaresma has changed it because now the Czechs have to win otherwise they will face the lottery of eh lots. If they only lost 2-1 a draw would have done them against Turkey. ]

and by the way its Jeff Stelling not Rub Curling.

I stand corrected. I'm off to bed.

There was an article on fourfourtwo.com last week about how penalty shoot outs can be used in the group stage as a result of a dead heat. I presume this is how they would work it if they draw.

I cant get a link the the article it's not on the site anymore.

According to the rules on the UEFA website, If the teams were not playing each other Czech Republic would qualify as they were seeded above Turkey (I.e. have a greater UEFA co-efficient based on recent results). This comes before Fair Play and Lots Drawing.

However, as they play each other, ranking is determined by going straight to penalties. (Rule 7.08)

They'd be separated by qualifying coefficients from the last two tourneys. I think Czechs have the edge there.

When Aprés Match are taking pot-shots at foreign TV presenters who will probably never know or care that they exist you have to wonder whether the joke's not on them (and us.)

Heard today it could be decided by penaltys if it's a draw? Sounds odd if true
