i reckon this guy isnt up to that Cork job. I coudnt believe when i heard they let rico go and were replacing him with matthews. prob be sacked at the end of the season if things keep going the way they are.

id love to see pete mahon taking over one of the big clubs nowadays. i reckon this guy has a bit of class and does a great job with UCD every year.

It didn't go well for him when he managed the biggest club of all ;)

One T in Mathews, there's only one T in Mathews, One T in Mathews...

Give the guy a chance, he's earned it. Things are bound to be very different at Cork than they were at Longford. Unless things go totally pear shaped he should be guaranteed 2 seasons at the club to show what he can do. No offence to Longford, but let him get a chance to gain experience and learn because it's a step up for him, but give him time and I think he'll come good.

We expect to challenge for the league but absolute minimum is qualification for Europe. Without that he will be sacked.

Why was Rico sacked cause that is what he did.

he deserves a fair crack of the whip to be honest. cork city have some excellent players but in midfield i get the feeling there is almost too much.farrelly, healy, gamble,o'callaghan et al,they are some of the best in the league but i dont think all of them can play together.i think another winger and striker would balance the team a lot nicer imo

i cant see them winning it, they haven't got going yet and if they dont get their act together they wont be in the top 2 or even 3.if this occurs then mathews wll be out the door,so should any manager with the players he's got

Because 2 fourth places wasn't good enough. It wont be for Mathews either.

Mathews is a chancer and a bluffer. Last night showed what he is all about. Get an early goal, and park the bus then. FFS, City were running the ball to the corner with 15 minutes to go last night. The sooner he is sacked the better for CCFC and the league.

I think we were watching a different game.

As far as Im aware Matthews has a three year contract and they are still paying Rico off. Would be very surprised if they sacked him and started paying three guys to do the one job. They would have to be relegated for him to be sacked.

The thing that we lack is midfield is pace. We have good footballers in the middle but no one that can get away from an opponent with a burst of speed.

Me too, that is an alarming observation to say we parked the bus. How way off that mark is that? :(

How many chances did City create last night? And please God don't say we had the dominance in possession, because that really counts for nothing.

Right so now parking the bus means dominating position but not creating enough clear cut chances?

I had a very different definition of it tbh, it generally involved you sitting back while your opponents attack.

I don't think City were particularly enterprising last night after the lead goal, and were happy to defend for the rest of the night. That is Alan Mathews influence. Also, City were playing time out with 15 minutes to go last night. Home side playing 10 men for the majority of the 2nd half should have put them to the sword.

Parking the bus might be hyperbole I will agree.

Happy to defend? What did we have to defend?

We weren't particularly great in any way last night, not least creatively in attack. But claiming it just a Mathews thing is just wrong. Last season we were just as toothless creatively.

We didnt sit deep, we just didnt play particularly well.

Don't get me wrong, Im far from Mathews biggest fan, but I think people want to use the stereotype they have of him a lot more quickly than they would use it if it were another manager (defensive, hoofing etc)

Defend, Sligo didn't get one corner through the whole games and had few if any shots on goal. You cannot be serious.

I suppose I better be honest and say I just really dislike Mathews as manager and would far prefer he were nowhere near CCFC.

You're not on your own, in fact i wasn't happy at all when i first heard it but its done now (and at that time) so i think we just have to get on with it.

The thing is though, if Rico had to go (for what ever reason, even three of four years later) there was always going to be a new manager at some stage, and they would have to be given time to sort things out.

Matthews has to be given time, like it or not. We just have to see how it goes but he is not as bad as i thought he would be, i have to give him that.

Thats it in a nutshell. In recent years we always had at least 1 pacey player who went space was created for him would beat him man.
