Diageo has announced that it is to close the Guinness breweries in Killkenny and Dundalk
from rte.ie (http://www.rte.ie/news/2008/0509/guinness.html): Guinness manufacturer Diageo has announced it is to close its brewing facilities in Dundalk and Kilkenny with the loss of up to 250 jobs.
They are talking of pumping €650M into St. James Gate, but are still talking of moving to a green-field site. Strange.
Anyway, shame about the job losses in Dundalk and Kilkenny. Waterford survived, it seems.

I think Waterford is all but automated now. Just about 10-15 engineers and fitters employed there. I think they make Guinness glue for export to Africa that they dilute at destination. Yum Yum.
I think they prefer to call it Essence of Guinness.
I imagine any new brewery will be fairly automated too. Heineken in Cork run a line with just a handful of engineers, and one line operator/team leader. Not a mention of a brewer.

Big Big loss for Kilkenny. Not to mention the smell of the hops and barley being roasted. Smells of the childhood. Sad day.

Yeah the smell of the hops mid morning and the klaxon at the end of the day.

Harp Lager RIPNo loss to the world.
The upside is that it will be years before those plants are closed. I would expect Guinness will provide a generous redundency package too.
Five years apparently.
Any news on Beamish's future?

Sorry, but Harp is just plain piddle. Budweiser - halitosis in liquid form - is golden nectar in comparison.
