Reminder : Fans Forum, Becketts Bar, Bohermore, Monday 19th May, 8.00pm.
We need a large turnout for this event. I would ask any poster here who is going to bring two or three people with them.
Jeff Kenna will be in attendance, with Galway United chief executive Nick Leeson.

It's a pity that it clashes with Monday Night Soccer on RTE.

What was said about strengthening the squad / money available / finances / short and medium term goals / anything memorable in general?

Nothing really we don't already know, bar the costs of the rent of Terryland which was €100,000 for 10 years of which we're in year 9, Devon are charging €40,000 per year for the Drom, plans are in place though to move out to Athenry and there's land there to build a pitch on next to Athenrys and they hope to sort that by next season!!
There is money available, a specified amount was not stated. No targets were mentioned, no positions either iirc
We are'nt over the 65% wage cap either, so we don't need to get rid of players to get more in!!.
A number of clubs will hit some trouble with it this year, with one club been pulled up on it after only 6 games!.
''a team not too far from here'' hit some form of trouble too(i can't remember that the trouble was though that bit escapes me, someone else might be able to fill that blank)

Some of the matters discussed, in particular in relation to the running of the club, should not be posted on any forum.

the fans forum was a public event, why not make the information public?

First of all, around 30 Galway United supporters were present. If posters here want to know what went on, they should have attended. Obviously, some posters could not attend for certain reasons, but a lot of the "internet spoofer" brigade just weren't bothered to make the effort to go to Becketts.
More importantly, no properly run EL club posts its financial, or internal, affairs on the internet. GUST have meetings every fortnight - some of the decisions or discussions are posted here or on the other United forum. Other matters most certainly are not.

I must say I disagree with you PA .
If a member of the press was in attendance last night would you have gone up to him or her and said this is a private matter and nothing can be printed about what is going to be said here tonight .
The words "Public meeting" says it all . At no time did anyone ever say that this was a closed meeting .

How can things spoken about in an open forum in a pub not be mentioned here???
gufct
20/05/2008, 10:15 AM
I couldnt make it last night because of a prior engagement the same as many of our genuine fans would have other commitments which stopped them going.
Should we not be able to find out what was spoken about at an open Forum Pa ?
Patrick Dunne

I was beside Nick Leeson, and I distinctly remember him making it clear before at least one statement, that it should not be put up on the internet.
Also, he mentioned a new sponsorship deal. Is it appropriate for the company involved at the moment to read about it on foot.ie ?
If details about the financial and internal workings of the club are posted here, then all that will happen is that similar information won't be released at future fora.
GUST hold public and open meetings, that doesn't mean that our financial situation, sponsorship deals, etc are posted here. I would expect supporters of the club to exercise some discretion in these matters.
If anyone wants to ring GUST chairperson Ronan Coleman at (087) 6972823, he can bring you up to speed on everything that was discussed last night. Alternatively send me a pm.

I'm with Pa on this.
I didn't go.
Naturally I'm curious about what went on but not curious enough to want it posted for supporters of other clubs, (some of whom seem to spend an inordinate amount of time on our board), to be privy to our business.
"News" be it good or bad, tends to get out quick enough anyway.

I'm with Pa on this too. It was obvious to anyone who attended that Nick spoke about some issues that he wouldn't disclose to some members of the press. Most of whom do their research on this site. As it was a GUST event the GUST section on the GUST forum would be a more appropriate place to discreetly discuss it.

If they were private figures then they would'nt be stated, i'm sure anyone can ask for details like that at the club and recieve them!!.
Can't believe some of the posts on the thread today, you'd swear Nick was talking to me in private and i was blabbing everything i heard out!.
It was a public forum, someone could have recorded it if they wanted too!!

Don't appreciate a lot of posts here basically labelling me a ''traitor'' for filling people in on things that were openly discussed at a public forum. As Claret said a reporter could have been there, also any PRIVATE matters were kept private like how much of the 65% wage cap we are actually at, and how much we have to spend in the window and on what players.
He named the figures for the training/rent because there obviously open accounts anyway for all to see!!.
It beggers belief what's posted on here sometimes!!

Are you havin' a laugh? I don't recall anyone labelling you as anything.
It was a public forum- tick
It could have been recorded - tick
The press could print waht they liked if they were there - tick
It's just that...........well........some things are best left unposted :D
Meantime chill out. Nobody accused you of anything, although you've left yourself open to a few accusations with this particular rant IMHO.
You were a great lad to go. Now stop obsessing and get back to your x-box or whatever it is you get your kicks from.

I could ahve quoted any number of posts from posters saying (roughly) ''That info' should not have been posted on an internet forum'', in other words saying i went behind the clubs back with ''top class information'' talked about openly at a public forum
And your a great lad for not going. Now stop obsessing and get back to your Oxford dictionary and whatever it is you get your grammar from!!

I think we are all going a bit over the top on this one .
Now I may be wrong but I just think PA may be a little upset that people would choose to sit at home and just wait until the next day on here to see what was said than turn up for the event .
Now I know a good few who are up in Dublin would look forward to reading in the morning what was said from last night and again people who would have been there only that other things came up and so .
I know it's a fine line we are talking about here but I do beleive we all have the Club at heart and none of us are out to stick the knife in .
Now if in future if something is said before a meeting well I think we would all be happy to toe the line and I must say I didn't hear Nic say anything about putting things on the internet and if he did I have to say that I have a second hand hearing aid for sale if anyone is interested .
Right I will get back to my book , "The spy that came in from the cold " which is a good read I must say .

No-one said that you were a traitor, gilberto. You were providing a good service by posting the key points from last night here.
Claret, you are correct. Many United supporters are based in Co. Galway, throughout Ireland, and abroad. It is only proper that they should have access to the same amount of information about GUFC as those based closer to Terryland.
However, United supporters should still be mindful about posting potentially sensitive information regarding GUFC here. My motto would be "If in doubt, leave it out".

Well maybe Jeff or Nick should have considered this motto before relying on fans to keep information from a public meeting private.Who is to say it was strictly GUFC fans in attendance?

:rolleyes:Just goes to show you can't win.
From some quarters they're hammered for not listening to supporteres and not taking their views on board. Then when they make themselves available, they get hammered for not being clear about the ground rules. Meantime they're supposed to keep us afloat and stave off relegation. Jeez, I think Brian Cowen has a much easier job than the two boys in the hot seats last night.

No one hammered them and there were'nt any ground rules.
No personal club information was given i.e transfer funds, wages to players etc.....

Patrick Dunne

Jeff confirmed Ian Foster as his assistant manager/physio. His last position was as physio for Kidderminister. He also stated that Shane Tracy would be returning from Limerick on July 1st, and that Shane is currently injured. Jeff will be available as a player from July 1st.
