OK it's a CD I'm doing up, but mixtape sounds better. It'll be the best hiphop tunes ever assembled in one place kind of thing - one CD, 16-18 songs, so space is squeaky tight.
Have much of it in me head already, but I'm hoping some of you may be able to suggest something that I've forgotten or may not have heard yet. Not just stuff that's really good, but iconic stuff that should be on any best hiphop CD ever assembled in your HO. Ta for your help.

Already got (not in order):

Ty - Ha Ha
Grandmaster Flash - The Message or White Lines (not sure which yet)
Bubba Sparxxx - Deliverance
Eric B & Rakim - I Know You Got Soul
The Nextmen ft Dynamite MC - High Score (Stanton Warriors Remix)
Evil Nine ft Aesop Rock - Crooked
Public Enemy - Bring The Noise
Dizzee Rascal - Stand Up Tall
Beastie Boys - Sabotage
The Sugarhill Gang - Rapper's Delight
DJ Shadow ft Roots Manuva - GDMFSOB (Unkle Uncensored Version)
De La Soul - Eye Know
M.I.A. - Galang

and one or two more in reserve that I'm hoping there's better than about.

Ooh, maybe some Panjabi MC or ADF!

Definitely White Lines by Grandmaster Flash, 2 great songs but White lines just edges it

As for other songs, there has to be some more old school 80's rap in there, may I suggest "You got what I need" by Biz Markie...quality written all over it

If you don't think ''Nuthin but a G thang'' should get a mention there don't bother making it ;)

Timeless song that has unlimited playback

Also at least one 2pac song deserves a mention in a ''Legend'' list!!

California Love been the masses choice

My additions would be:

GZA - B.I.B.L.E (Basic Instructions before Leaving Earth)
Nas - The Word Is Yours Remix
Joell Ortiz - Hip Hop (remix feat Jadakiss and Saigon)
Wu Tang Clan- CREAM
Ludacris - Growing Pains
Warren G - Regulate
CunninLynguists - Dirty Acres
Flipsyde - Happy Birthday

I could Probably List all day, but that would do i suppose!!

What, no Vanilla Ice?

Actually, when this is done I'd love to get a copy as my knowledge of hip-hop doesn't go much beyond the early stuff you've mentioned there.

White Lines just about sneaks it for me too.

I don't like much of that type of stuff, but Handsome boy modelling school - rocknroll is something i like.

Tbh after seeing some of the songs you have there, i'm confused, I don't know where, Rap Hip-Hop or Black music:) as I call it , starts/ends

Not a big hip-hop fan, but these three are worth a place on any mixtape:

Public Enemy: Black Steel in the Hour of Chaos
Disposable Heroes of Hiphoprisy: Hypocrisy is the Greatest Luxury
MC Paris: The Devil Made Me Do It.

I do miss the days when rap was more about social change than how much bling you had.

Ones i give here and just ones i still listen too these days.)

Give Mos Def & Talib Kwelli's most recent stuff a rattle also try out Jebus' recommendation of Common, its a step away from the whole Ho's & Bling thing!

Intwesting project, please do furnish us with the final cut.

Given you're doing an iconic mixtape, Afrika Bambaataa's non-appearance was most conspicuous for me! Though that said, I'm not particularly a fan, so I wouldn't dare give a stout recommendation for most worthy songs. I suppose 'Planet Rock' was his most seminal, iconic offering, even if not entirely original!

Elsewhere, I think the simple, lyrics-above-all sound of Boogie Down Productions would deservedly vie for a place in the classic section and isn't a sound that I've heard replicated much so maybe that should be considered. I'd maybe go for 'My Philosophy' or 'I'm Still #1', but really any of their early stuff would be worthy of a coveted spot.

Of the more mainstream hip-hop tunes 'Seed 2.0' by The Roots was my favourite for years so would probably make my list, just to let you know.

Ooh, maybe some Panjabi MC or ADF!

Or how about Crazy Éire, or Messiah J & the Expert?! I suppose the French are most prominent after Brits/Americans so maybe MC Solaar should get a look in? Add a bit of language diversity for completeness sake? Nah, you gotta go with something from one of the Irish crew! :) Maybe 'All The Other Girls' or 'Place Your Bets Now' by Messiah J? (http://www.myspace.com/messiahjandtheexpert) (myspace link)

Can't stand Messiah J and the Expert.

If you're putting in Irish hip-hop, go with RiRá or Gudmen.

If you want to add some foreign hip-hop, try Mala Rodriguez.

Not looking beyond UK/US to be honest, Panjabi MC and ADF in my eyes being squarely in the former camp, as is M.I.A. MC Solaar would be a possible exception alright. Irish hiphop I know nothing about beyond Collie!

Seriously overlooked a lot of candidates, Boogie Down Productions being one, well KRS-One at least, and the Jungle Brothers another. Most shamefully, though, I forgot to put in some PM Dawn! :o

sure there is no such thing other than american hiphop. :)

Unless you're talking pre about 1993 I'll treat that comment with the contempt normally reserved for all those overpaid bling-merchants constantly banging on about how great they are. ;)

Those types aside, some great suggestions throughout, a lot to look into. Looking like a double CD now though.

Your just not listening to the right people Boo Boy!

Try The CunninLynguists, Aesop Rock, Blue Scholars, Cormega, and Nas still on top of their game, AZ's old stuff was great, new album gone a bit commercial. Wu Tangs 8 Diagrams opened a lot of eyes, as did some of Outkasts new songs this year. Lupe Fiasco and Common are unreal too!, check out hiphpdx.com, they have loads of great new stuff, updated all the time, no downloads though, just streaming.

for modern hiphop, check Edan, some excellent stuff. also madlib and mf doom quite good

i cant listen to any of them, all they do is rap about their big 'cribs' & fast cars.

that **** doesnt mean anything, back in the 90's the music meant something.

Then you obviously havent tried listening to who i suggested, none of them (Well maybe AZ on his undeniable album, the newest one, not the Real AZ though!) rap about their cribs and fast cars, i dont buy in to that!, thats what i call sell out rap!

All above mentions are lyrical masters!,try before you knock!

Agree with Ken foree, Mf Doom is quality, if you are a fan of political rap though, checkk out Immortal Technique or Akir, his protegé, true meaningful rap!, and as i previously mentioned, 8 Diagrams by the Wu is UNREAL!!

Nappy Roots are a great group too but they lost their big label backing a few years ago so their stuff is harder to get hold of.

Nas is still pretty good and the last Snoop Dogg album was very good. Haven't got his new one yet.

I'll have you know i did grow up listening to Pac, Biggie, NWA, and the rest!,im an 80's baby!, Cormega, Common, Wu Tang, Nas..... ALL were about in the 90's mate!, only ones most people this side of the Atlantic heard of were Pac, Dre and Biggie!, hip hop is bigger than them!, I'm not denying the Lyrical quality of 2Pac, or the great Beats of Dre etc, but they werent as smart as Nas or some of the others!

Just to keep ye in the loop;

I've got a shortlist of 116 songs, and I've put 40 odd of those in the "must burn" folder, which is now already just over 3 cds. Many of them haven't been mentioned yet but will make ye go "oh yeah, forgot that one!", can't wait for that.
One Common, one Kanye, no Nas, no Biggie, no Wu-Tang thus far.
We're on for at least a triple, at the very least. But I've work to do now. See ye next year!

Oh BTW, the Dream Warriors are Canadian, so that's the international dimension. :)

Noby, despite your intransigence earlier, you're first up for the burned result.

But I'm sure that left in your capable hands there won't be one filler on any of the eight cds. I'm looking forward to it.

And I do like Trojan Ska, but don't quite get what you're saying - maybe it's a bit early in the morning for me.

Here it is, the magnificent octopus.
In four blistering volumes, loosely arranged into ear-friendly styles, which contain, though perhaps not exclusively, the best hiphop tunage that money can buy. It is a mixtape at the end of the day, so there might be a linker tune or two.
