Bear with me here but I detect a relationship between the coolness of a sportsmans name and their quality.

Lionel Messi is a cool name - Dean Windass is not

Brett Favre is a cool name - Rex Grossman is not

Ayrton Senna is a cool name - Nigel Mansell is not (yes I know......)

Tiger Woods is a cool name - Omar Uresti is not

Kieran Fallon is a cool name - Cash Asmussen is not

The conclusion is that crap names will never be any good at their sport.

Cash Ashmussen is a great name. Kieran isn't. Either is Brett. best two players in US football are called Tom and Peyton. Zzzzzzz

Although i tend to agree with your general point

From an English language perspective only I suppose.

Paolo Rossi would be a pretty standard name in Italy I guess, but sounds great compared with English names.

I have a similar theory regarding boxers. Anytime I hear a Latin American sounding name, I just imagine the boxer must be top quality.

Salvador Sanchez vs. Pat Cowdell
Orlando Canizales vs. Billy Hardy
Carlos Monzon vs Bennie Briscoe

The Latinos are always going to win with names like that.

I agree, someone called Terry Henry would never be any good
