"Viva la Vida or Death and All His Friends" is out in a month and a half (June 13th), but the new single is on their website now at www.coldplay.com/song.html to download for free. Its called "Violet Hill". Not the best opening single they have ever come out with but its still pretty good. Definatley a different sound from the piano inspired "Speed of Sound".
Anyone else hear it?

'A Rush of Blood To The Head' and 'Parachutes' were pretty good, but I really didnt like a lot of 'X&Y'. And what sort of title is the album. Viva La Vida sounds like a Ricky Martin tribute act.

X&Y is supposed to be the X and Y chromosomes, it was just after his daughter was born. the cover art was DNA
can't remember where I heard that

Very hit and miss band in my opinion. They can be great or just plain boring. Have Parachutes and Rush of Blood, but stopped there.

Big Coldpaly fan and really like the new single. Can't wait for the full album and all going well a concert.
X & Y is one of my fav albums. Fix you played a big part in my recent wedding and played speed of sound at a recent gig and still sounds good.
Oh and the remix of clocks is top notch !!

Coldplay feature prominantly in Q this month. Interview and Album Review.
The new album is apparently not the giant "Kid A" leap forward in their trademark sound - its still recognisably Coldplay - but its a well received review. (4 Stars).
I noticed the interview contains a lot of "X+Y" revisionism as to actually how good it was. The band and the new albums producer, Brian Eno feel it was too long and overblown, too clinical and had "Pro Tools" hand marks all over it.
Eno set about tearing up their established working methods which appears to have revitalised the band and their sound.
Looking forward to hearing it.

Just heard the full album and first thoughts are that its nothing special.
Its definetly different from anything they have done in the past.
It will be interesting to see how well it does.
If anyone is interested in listening to it just pm me.

Cold play !! some of the most simplistic songs with terrible lyric's i dont know how anybody listens to them , take one fingure tap it on the desk once every second there you have the basis to the vast majority of there songs no imagination at all.

Conjures up an image of the band and Brian Eno huddled in a recording studio with Chris Martin sat at a desk, self consciously tapping out a melody with his finger every two seconds. Just to be avant garde.

I've listened to the album twice now. Refreshingly different for them. X&Y was really average, but this one, dare i say it, is pretty damn good.

I like Coldplay and I have to say that they are potentially the closest thing to a modern day Beatles.
I realised this when watching the Violet Hill video and saw their style of dress and movement. Even outside their music their careers are similar. By that I mean what they campaign for and who their married to.
Violet Hill is defo one of their best work.
A good band and they're never going to please the cool kids so I wouldn't worry about anyone knocking them. They suffer from the association lazy journos/media types make of them with terrible tribute acts like Slow Patrol etc
Coldplay are at least 500 times better than every band that has tried to be them in the last 6/7 years
A good point who are never going to please the cool kids. They als suffer from the acts of their terrible tribute acts like Slow Patrol etc
Somebody was hanging out with my old friend Jim Beam anyway :)
Wowser....
Editted (kinda) now.

i liked the unedited version better.
But do love the new album, i can hear the eno influence in it.
fav track is Strawberry Swing
Really liking the new one on it's first play alright. Good to see they've gone from being a singles band to one that is trying to make solid wall to wall albums. Liking the title track Viva La Vida too

Favourite tracks, Viva La Vida, Strawberry Swing, the hidden track at the end of Yes (Chinese Sleep Chant), the songs within songs really add to it.

Going back to Eno, parts of the album really really sound like James when Eno worked with them.

Haven't listened to the whole album yet but is it safe to say they've rescued their image as a likable band from the mire their last album left them in, samples from techno songs, et al?

Liking the album. It's a cohesive collection songs that lend themselves to listening to the album as a whole. Very few weak moments. Hopefully the start of Coldplay - Mark II.
As someone previously mentioned, among the influences I can identify slight traces of James "Laid" album - in a good way. No coincidence that Eno produced that album also.
"42" is great melting pot of a song in the "Happiness is a Warm Gun", "Paranoid Android" mould.
got the album last week - think its very good. Wouldnt be a huge fan all the same and didnt get into X&Y really...
X & Y is one of my fav albums. Fix you played a big part in my recent wedding
Fix You is a great song however and this is the best use of it ever. Watch the whole clip if you can...

No. The answer remained 42 but they couldn't figure out the question. However, they located God's message to the universe.

Yeah, great.
42 has drilled its way into my brain and refuses to leave along with Supergrass's "Ghost of a Friend".
