Cascarino went to celtic for a million, no?
Andy Townsend; Norwich to Chelsea pre-dates that. £1.2M in 1990

Depends how you define Irish, Krstic. That noted Irishman Alan McLoughlin went for £1m in 1990, I seem to remember hearing that he was the first.

Sorry, Irish, as in ROI International, even if the transfer pre-dates their International call up.
Townsend moved after the World Cup, before the start of the season. A quick search seems to suggest that McLoughlin didn't move until December.
terry phelan £2.5m, cant recall the year, just seem to remember it was a record transfer for an irish international at the time (and maybe a world record for a defender?? or was that my imagination??)

That was 1992 when he went form Wimbledon to Man City. Think it was Keith Curle who also went for the same price. Both were joint British records for a defender.

From Daily Telegraph (http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/main.jhtml?xml=/sport/2007/10/31/sfnley131.xml) 31st October 2007
Frank Stapleton was capped for the Republic of Ireland while playing for Arsenal and then United. He signed professional terms at Highbury in 1973 and played in three consecutive FA Cup finals, scoring in the 1979 Wembley showpiece against United.
Twice Arsenal's leading scorer, Stapleton, now 51, moved to United in August 1981 for £900,000 and featured in their FA Cup final successes of 1983 and 1985.
"The teams have been rivals for a long, long time, not just in recent years, and over the more recent years the transfer market has changed," said the Dubliner, now a resident of Manchester.
"Very few players in the last couple of decades have gone from one big club to another. The route has been circuitous with, say, Paul Ince arriving at Liverpool from Manchester United via Inter Milan."
Interestingly, in both the case of Anderson and Stapleton, the clubs could not agree on a fee. "They set mine at £900,000," Stapleton said. "Trevor Francis had become the first £1 million player when he moved from Birmingham to Forest a couple of years earlier, and I think they wanted to avoid reaching the figure.

I gave you the benefit of the doubt after your first sentence but couldn't be so benevolent after your second. I never had a cricket lover like you down as a member of the Gaelic League.
He was good enough to play for 'your' country Sheridan, so I guess that means he qualifies.

Think this might be a winner!
Had a quick look at wikipedia so some of these figures are open to question but the other big Irish transfers around the same era I found were:
1990 Irwin Oldham - Man u : 625k
1989 McGrath Man U - Villa : 400k
1992 Houghton Liv - Villa : 900k
1990 Townsend Nor - Villa : 1.2m
1991 Stan Liv - Villa : 1.1m
1990 Quinn Arse - Man C : 800k
1990 Cas Millwall - Villa : 1.5m
1990 McLoughlin Swindon - Soton :1.0m

Similarly, Lawrenson signed for the Pool in 81 for 900k.

Much as Lawrenson is one of the most annoying men on television if Rio Ferdinand was worth £31m is 2002 Lawro would have to have been worth around £50m, he was top class....
