Still as lean and mean as he was years ago, Phelan - who turns 41 on Sunday - set standards for Otago in covering ground, closing down passing options, and from an advanced midfield role, he also made sorties up the wing, and launched a couple of shots that headed goal wards.

Phelan hot hot hot!

More than a Phelan...

Phelan groovy...

The list of possible tribute songs is as long as the trip to Otago.
Sorely missed.

'We've got that Terry Phelan' was the song of the trip in USA 94 after 'The 12 days of Paul McGrath'!! Classic memories!

I still love the Terry Phelan story from last year's International Players reunion at Croke Park. He was chatting to Niall Quinn and (I'll parahrase a bit) but the exchange apparently went something like this....

TP: "So Niall, what are you up to these days?"

NQ: "Em, actually I'm Chairman of Sunderland"

TP: "Really, that's great. Who's the manager there now?"

I think the tall one was a bit shocked that the news hadn't reached New Zealand....

Terry is an Irish legend though - the closest thing we had to David Langan with his no-nonsense bombing down the touchline. There were a few howlers but he was a warrior for us.

Eir Sport recently showed the game in Windsor Park from the 1994 World Cup qualifying campaign.

Terry Phelan was booed by the north's fans throughout. Anyone remember what that was about?

Only Alan Kernaghan received a similar reception but I'm guessing that was because he played schoolboys football for them.

i suspect if you listen closer its something much worse than simple booing...

I thought that at first, but Paul McGrath isn't getting it.

Somehow Terry got it louder, both boos and monkey chants.
