View Full Version : Favourite Cartoon Strips
Leading off someone mentioning Andy Capp in a thread I started fondly remembering the days of flicking through the various papers polluting my family home reading the cartoon strips as a kid. Garfield was and has always been my favourite (I still have both Garfield and Peanuts cartoon strip collections), followed by Peanuts, Andy Capp and more recently Cyanide and Happiness and the various Steve Bell strips in G2.
I could never understand why the Indo printed a James Bond comic strip to be honest, the basic daily newspaper comic strip, or the best anyway, should allow for a quick glance and a chuckle, not try and draw you into a murder mystery story. Anyway, anyone have any favourites or favoured comic strips they can recommend online or otherwise? I somehow can't bring myself to buying the Star just for the Garfield comic strip each day

Used to love Haggar the Horrible and Gary Larssons "Farside" in the Herag before my eyes were opened to the evils on The Independent Media Group

Still a Dilbert and Nemi fan, but I have recently come to love this occasional online strip (http://xkcd.com/408/)
Used to read Dilbert daily lost the habit recently.
I know not a cartoon strip as such but really like Martyn Turners work in the Irish Times.

Andy Capp is always excellent. There’s a football themed one, again, in the Mirror, Cant Kick Wont Kick which hits the spot a lot. Kerber and Black do it, their topical ones are nearly always funny too. i remember in the magazine 90 Minutes, ‘Damage in the Box’ had some classics.
XKCD (Bluebeard's link) is a good one alright.
jebus, if you like Garfield (as I do, myself), you might like Garfield Minus Garfield (http://garfieldminusgarfield.tumblr.com/)
Who would have guessed that when you remove Garfield from the Garfield comic strips, the result is an even better comic about schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and the empty desperation of modern life? Friends, meet Jon Arbuckle.

XKCD is updated Mon/Wed/Fri. Occasional seems a bit harsh. :) One of the funniest, nerdiest things on the internet too.

I get Dilbert by e-mail every day; usually good for a laugh. Andy Capp's quality too.
Never laughed at The Far Side. I mean, ever.

Garfield for me too. I had dozens of books as a kid, and still have a stuffed toy I was given the day I was born.
Recently, I've been a fan of Shoe. (http://macnelly.com/archives.php) Don't know how popular it is in Ireland.

I hate Garfield so f*cking much. Everything about it annoys me, The sooner he gets hit by a car the better.
I like Calvin and Hobbes: http://www.marcellosendos.ch/comics/ch/index.html
...and best of all these ones from the Perry Bible Foundation:

Personal favourites include these genius efforts:

There's something about the top hat and toothpaste references in the last frame that I find hilarious.

Ah! I was wondering what days it came up. I'm only a convert since just before Easter, and I have been unable to fathom the days it is upgraded. Perhaps I should have said "Apparently randomly". This is beginning to sound like an XKCD now.
So look at this instead

Thats a strange coincidence. Never seen that before, but I've very recently received two little dinosaurs with a short poem/story about them, written and and clearly designed by Edward Monkton. :)

This one has just ended but read it from the beginning, the story lines are fun and the artwork is often nothing short of brilliance.
