Monaghan United had some battle on their hands yesterday by all accounts. We struggled to field a team due to injuries and work committments and just had the bare 11. One of our women then got injured just before the 2nd half kicked off and struggled limping for the rest of the game. This is their first year in the Senior Cup and only their 3rd year in football so they were thrilled to be able to move on to the next round.

How on earth did someone arrange the u.16 games on the same wekend as an u17 international match. Its no wonder some people get frustrated with the FAI.

Isn't the National Cup a WFAI competition which as far as I was aware is a totally seperate body to the FAI?

What Wilton player was playing in this U17 game? Was that the game v N.Ireland? I thought that was a friendly, surely the player would've been excused from international duty for a national cup fixture??

Mullins Hat-Trick puts Galway Ladies on All-Ireland trail again.

Galway & District League 3 - 0 Dundalk
The Galway & District League Ladies team continued their defence of the FAI Senior Cup in fine style on Sunday in Terryland Park with a comprehensive 3 nil victory over Dundalk.

Galway played composed football from the start and with Meabh de Burca and Ruth Fahy dominating the mid-field exchanges, they asserted themselves from the start. Deirdre Connell on the right wing and Julie-Ann Russell on the left gave the team great width. It was no surprise when after 16 minutes Russell skipped by a couple of defenders, getting to end line before crossing an inch perfect pass that Kara Mullins finished to the back of the net with ease.

Galway’s back four of Becky Walsh , Annette Clarke , Aine Hannon and Emer Flatley were in total control and team Manager Stephen Lally will have been pleased in particular with the performance of Flatley who had the unenviable task of replacing Niamh Fahy at the heart of the defence.

Although dominating for long periods, Galway didn’t add to their tally until a few minutes before the break. Susie Cunningham was giving the Dundalk defence a torrid time and when she was fouled on the edge of the box , up stepped Mullins and with great skill curled the free kick around the wall and into the bottom corner of the net.

The second half was more of the same with Galway in control. Keeper Melissa Casserly although dealing comfortably with everything that came her way will scarcely have a quieter day. The introduction of Paula Kelly, Heather Duffy and in particular Lucy Hannon added a freshness and momentum to the Galway cause. Hannon had a number of opportunities to put her name on the scoresheet but in the end settled for an assist in the last goal which was again finished with some style by the impressive Kara Mullins.

There was no further scoring but Galway Ladies can be well pleased with their performance. Team manager Stephen Lally afterwards commented “ I am very happy with the win and getting through to the ¼ Final was our primary objective. Niamh (Fahy) is a huge loss to our squad but am delighted that Emer (Flatley) slotted so easily in there today and what about Kara’s hat-trick. Yes I am pleased overall an we can now focus our EUFA Cup games in early September.”

Galway can now look forward to the ¼ Final draw and the EUFA cup games where they will take on the Champions of Belarus , Switzerland and the host nation Bosnia – Herzegovina on the 4th 6th and 9th September.

Team: Melissa Casserly, Aine Hannon , Becky Walsh , Annette Clarke , Emer Flatley, Julie-Ann Russell, Ruth Fahy, Meadbh De Burca (Capt), Deirdre Connell, Kara Mullins, Susie Cunningham.

Subs: Lucy Hannon, Aoife Burke, Paula Kelly, Heather Duffy, Tara Gavin, Tina Hughes, Theresa Fahy, Anna McCormack and Jessica McSweeney.

dundalk V lifford was big result.

Anyone know Lifford team? I think a few of their stars let them down massively by not turning up.....real pity.

With regards to Galway...Ruth Fahy is some player, always working and moving, passing and tackling. Galway lucky to have such a player in their squad!

Cork beat ballina thats a bit of a shock too ain't it! Was talking to some Ballina girls recently and they said it should be comfortable win for them...maybe they were too relaxed!

Good draw though, St. Francis and Galway the teams to beat. Galway done a lot of preparation, especially their trip to Manchester and getting to the final of the Elite Competition. If they can avoid each other to the final it'd be a good final.

Predictions anyone?
I'll go with St. Francis, Mayo, Wexford and Galway for the semi's

 anyone else for a prediction?

Heard thats exactly what happened with Ballina, they went out there thinking they were gonna trash Cork off the the pitch i myself taught Ballina were gonna win but when you go out with that attitude you always get complacent, heard Cork should've won by more if anything.

Id go with St Francis, Galway, Mayo. Not sure bout Cork V Wexford game dont no alot bout the Wexford team. Agree with Squeez tho if St Francis and Galway can avoid each other in Semi's think it'll defo be those two in the final and what a game it would be.

With regard to the Cork Ballina game I don't think Ballina expecting a walk in the park is fair. If it was a last minute goal that won it or an early goal and backs against the wall stuff for the rest of the game maybe but once Cork went ahead Ballina never got level, surely they would have realised after going two behind that this wasn't an easy game. In saying that the Cork players and especailly their manager must be dancing a jigg after seeing the draw. No disrespect to Wexford but they avoided St Francis, Galway, Mayo and Peamount and they are at home. Also wexfordrules was on here recently saying how wexford are out of season and up to this year had never won a match in senior cup. In Wexford Rules own words from earlier in this post "in most peoples eyes, we would be considered the handy draw" Cork or Wexford are going to be in the semi final, the likes of Wilton and Raheny will be cursing the luck of the draw, but thats football best of luck to both of them, it could be 3 of the semi finalists are league teams.
With regards Lifford I am friendly with one of their players and she told me they were only missing their keeper. The other "Lifford" players were never going to be their. Marie Curtin hasn't played for them in over a year. Edel Malone was told by her US university to report for preseason this week. I don't think she should risk her scholarship for that game. Another player who played for Irish under age is out injured for months and another with international under age experiance has been in USA all summer, so Lifford were depleated but they knew they would be. So 37Beour i disagree they were let down but I do agree with you about Ruth Fahy, I've seen her play 3 times and think she is class, has she ever got a look in to Irish senior team, surely with a little experince at that level she would give Noel King another good option for his team. And after the Euro's she should have plenty of experience.

I still say the same regarding Wexford, we are out of season, still without some of our better players due to other codes but we were delighted with the team spirit in our game v Monaghan

The Cork v Wexford draw is probably the best draw for both teams and one of them will be in the semi final and cup football is a great leveller, so who knows what might happen. We are looking forward to our trip to Cork on Sept 7th and will give it the best shot we can

At present, if they avoid each other it looks like a St Francis v Galway League Final, but who knows

CorkRebel i am just merely stating what the Lifford manager said himself. Lifford played a game in Limerick League a couple of days before and after that game he was seen having an argument with two players in the carpark regarding the senior cup game, who in the end didn't play against Dundalk. They were two def starters for the side. Damien is a proud man and for him to even talk about his own players like that is a clear sign he isn't happy and is very much so disillusioned. I am not sayin the players should of changed their priorities i am just sayin thats the story coming out of the Lifford camp and the story being told in Limerick.

I agree with you about Ruth Fahy and International duty, def should be given a trial at least. In my eyes she is top class and would maybe be that bit better than her Salthill Teammate Meabh De Burca who is good as we all know. It would be worth given her a chance at least to see her worth. The same could be said about a few players hanging out in the colleges league tho, which goes all back to the scouting scenario but thats a diff thread and don't want to really get into it here:D

I'm not trying to argue about Lifford I was just saying from what I heard that saying players let the club down was a bit over the top but maybe we are talking about different players. All i'm saying as according to who i was speaking to the only player who left them down was the keeper I don't know her name so I cant actually say what it is but I'll try find out. You should start that other thread I think a few pople would have an opinion for it.
As for Cork Wexford game I will obviously be supporting Cork but hoping for a good game.

Cork Rebel you shouldn't make statements about another club when you dont know what you are talking about.
You said that the only player missing was the keeper.
The Lifford keeper was not missing. She played in the game. Lifford were short their left and right full backs, their sweeper, their left winger and at least one midfielder. This is not taking into account the American players.
I guested with Lifford in a tournament abroad some years ago. I had a brilliant time and I have kept in touch with many of the Lifford girls. There were only 4 girls over age 20 in the game v Dundalk. They brought a bunch of kids who did really well and 4 of them are on the u.16 team. The Lifford girls have no complaints about the game and said they really enjoyed it. They are just looking forward to their next game so I dont think we should comment any further.

First of all isn't the whole point of a forum to share info which is exactly what I did, I said I was talking to one of their players who told me they were missing players but they knew they would be! I never said this is exactly what happened I posted the info I was given, again what I thought was the point of a forum? Maybe I'm wrong? Anyway I was trying to defend Lifford players because someone said they left the club down which from the info (NOT GOSPAL TRUTH, JUST WHAT SOMEONE PLAYING WITH LIFFORD SAID TO ME) I got was wrong, and from what I heard the players didn't leave Lifford down. I don't see why I shouldn't be allowed to say that? While I did say that I was told the only player they were missing was the keeper I think it's clear from the rest of my post that it was said in the context of "On the day besides the four they knew they would be missing only the keeper was missing" They are dead right to be looking forward to their next game and all the best to them, however I didn't think it was fair to say "I think a few of their stars let them down massively by not turning up" because that would incinuate particularly players who I think could be classed in the Star category. BTW the person who said that was well within their right to say what they thought, as that is what a forum is for. Libero4 could you enlighten me as to what stars left Lifford down?

munsterman

What's this Munster Senior Cup about? I thought that had been scrapped, last year it was played prior to the senior cup starting. A friend of mine told me that the cork league play their cup finals that weekend, so that'll surely affect the cork v benfica game?

So what's the story with this cup? who's organising this? is wfai? fai? munster wfa??

corkrebel
25/08/2008, 8:07 PM
The Munster WFAI, who are in charge of Munster's Gaynor Cup teams ran the Munster Senior Cup last year, I presume it's them again, but Wilton still haven't played last years plate Final!!! I dunno was the Cup final played?
If the Cork Cup finals are on and Munster Cup is on then its not being organised very well from the start. It will probably effect Wilton and Could effect Ballincollig which means all games would be off.
Also I thought there was a Limerick Desmond League team and I tipp League team are they gone or what?

LmkSnr
25/08/2008, 11:03 PM
Lifford won munster senior cup in 2007.They beat Limerick37 in the final.Which made it an all Limerick League affair as Lifford play in the Limerick League.

This year the Desmond and Tipperary League team have disbanded and have not entered the WFAI Senior Cup.

Think Lifford and Wilton will play a double header with the Munster U14 final and Munster Senior Cup match together......looks like an obvious choice.
