Mass pyro display at a Ireland game?
i think so, all the ultras in ireland turn up for a qualifier game and let a few off, just to let the f.a.i that we're thinking of them;) As for them being dangerous yes they are dangerous but only in the wrong hands, what incidents are there in ireland of anyone getting really seriously injured? (multi-coloured wigs not valid) they are dangerous in the wrong hands but they are great at adding atmoshpere in the parts of the stadiums that are usually full of atmosphere. they are not for everyone so if you dont like them surely you'll know where not to stand so that there is no chance of yourself getting harmed. there is a reason they are used in adverts aswell because they look good and show the passion of the league many who dont attend games dont see

Oft repeated never verified!
I've had the misfortune of standing next to idiots with them in a packed stand a couple of times, and it's not an experience I relished. It certainly felt dangerous - though obviously you won't be happy until someone self-imolates...
Given that football tops are made of the sort of material that goes up like a bonfire, I personally have zero interest in being near tw@ts with flares when I'm wearing one...

Unsurprising to find fans of small teams particularly enthusiastic about flares.
I guess when you haven't got the fans to create an atmosphere, visual gimmicks are all you've got to fall back on....

The statistical likelihood of being injured by a flare at a football match is low compared to the statistical likelihood of you getting hurt on your way to the game or by some other factor (like being cut by rusty metal) at the game. Are Bray going to wait until someone gets their leg amputated to ban rusty seats?

Bray's stadium has a safety certificate - incl its seats.
Meanwhile - no stadium is allowed to have flares. I don't see what is so difficult to grasp about this.
I guess if teenagers started waving Bray's rusty seats around in a crowded place 'for the buzz' and to create a 'mad atmosphere', then those seats would probably also face a ban. But not before.

Have to agree with this Steve. How come every advert/promotion clip of the league has flares in it, as a focal point and they are outlawed here with the fines regime and all the noise about them? Rules are there to be broken, to a certain extent. I know the argument against them, yeah yeah yeah, all well and good but i agree with Red Army on this one.
When AC Milan stop using them i'll agree with the ruling.

i think we all know a convincing argument on the internet is not going to get anything changed and flares will always be banned everyone has grasped that, if you can make your way back to the 1st post my point was that flares and the likes are used al over the world but seem to be enforced more heavily here in a smaller league for the profit of the F.A.I. i know the F.A.I have to impose these rules but why are the bigger leagues allowed to get away with it, they are in the public eye a lot more than the LOI?

How often do you see flares in the PL? How often do you see them in Spain? Because they're banned, with good reason.
I accept that they look good, but from a safety and financial point of view, they're OB.

You don't see them in the EPL because you can't fart without some moaning day trippers alerting security.
You don't see them in Spain because Spain don't have ultras. I don't know why, but they don't. Perhaps something to do with the likelihood of being shot at by Franco's troops.

Flares are considered a firearm under UK legislation, that's why you don't see them in England.

Sorry, but back to the thread. To me, I go to a footy match to watch The Beautiful Game and discuss various aspects of it (offside, great touch, hard luck, bleedin' plonker etc) with whoever is beside me. I don't give a **ck about flares, displays Ultras (wtf) banners, 'being served', unless it is in a pub.
Enjoy the game, celebrate a victory, be dismayed at a defeat, get a dvd at Xtravision for pyrotechnical displays

No atmosphere.
Fire is atmospheric. Thats why women think a log fire is romantic, why pilgrims to Lourdes get excited at the torchlight procession and part of how the Nazis came to power.

Semi-finalists FC Zenit St. Petersburg and Olympique de Marseille have both been fined following disturbances involving their supporters at UEFA Cup games.
Zenit have been fined €8,000 after fans set off fireworks and a smoke bomb during their 1-0 home win against Villarreal CF on 13 February.
Marseille, have been fined €20,000 after their fans threw missiles and set off fireworks at the same game.

The point of the FAI seems to be that they similarly don't give a "flying fck" what you think. They'll continue to fine clubs whose fans use flares at games.

I think flares look great personally, but there's a clear public safety risk involved, particularly in old and decrepit stadia such as those in our league.
Just last month in Bosnia, Modrica's goalkeeper Bojan Tripic severely burned his hands removing a flare thrown by opposition fans from the pitch and missed several games as a resullt.

None taken. I was simply affording John and Steve's posts the respect they deserved. People keep bringing up red herrings like the legality of flares into this debate when nobody is disputing their legal status. As for throwing them, well of course there should be fines for throwing them at players, near players and they shouldn't be thrown at all.

Fines totaling €300 among three sepearte clubs are considered noteworthy!!!!, and abusive messages are posted on the MB. I am very happy that the FAI attempt to keep pyromaniacs in check if their response is to abuse the organisation running football in the country. I'm glad Intermediate Certificate students aren't running football nor making decisions on my safety.
