Over first five yards no doubt. Henry said recently he never saw anyone quicker than Leo over the first 5. Over distance Ronaldo.

would you say Messi is quicker than Ronaldo? At running or at falling to the ground?

over 20 yards - ronaldo is quicker..
over 5 yards - id say messi is as quick as him

but the big thing is in a game situation when theres very little space to go past players [like last night with united having a 10 man defence] messi can burst past players in tight spaces because of his pace and unbelievalble ball control..kaka would be very similar in that regard too..
as for ronaldo, i just don't think hes capable of that.. hes needs space to run into behind the defenders to hurt a team.. i dont think he has a patch of the ball skills of messi/kaka in close quarters with loads of defenders around him..
because of this i'd liken ronaldo more to kevin kilbane than messi.. its just hes a few yards quicker than kilbane :)

I'd have Messi, Kaka and Torres ahead of the Ladyboy CRonaldo.

For me, Ronblado just hasnt done it on the biggest stage to be considered the best yet, he has been the form player this year, but wont be "The Best" until he produces consistently at the highest level.

id personally much prefer to be quicker over 20 yards than quicker over 5 yards
And what if the defender is equally as quick? The advantage of being quick over a short distance is that you are taking on the defender while he isn't moving and catching him flat footed. I don't think Ronaldo would have as much success in La Liga as in the Premiership as in Spain the defences sit more deep, leaving less space in behind. It's why Torres went from only scoring aroun 15 a season in Spain to 20+ in England.

In the last week, I've noticed more than ever, that he doesn't do it in the big games.

he was united best player by a distance in the first half in barca and was on the bench yesterday

 What game were you watching? He was anonymous.

Bottled the peno. To say he was Man U's best player doesn't say much. They were very poor.

I think he was on the bench for a reason. Fergie knew he's not up to it. Fergie tried an injured Rooney on the wing before bringing Ronaldo on.

Are you mental? You think Ferige rested the man who won him the league last season because he thinks isn't up to it?! The guy has played non stop all season - he wants him refreshed for Tuesday.

I think we can put this issue to bed now..... Messi made Evra one of the best Left Backs in the world look average. Ronaldo spent the game, as he often does, looking for excuses to to help him get over the fact that he can't produce on the big occasion.

Drop him for the biggest game of the season and only bring him on when the main striker is hobbling. Sorry, it doesn't suggest that Fergie has all that faith in him for the big occassions. Loads of other players have played plenty games this season and they played on Saturday. So why drop Ronaldo?

too many people too quick to judge a man on one performance. i hate ronaldo but cannot tell if a player is the best in the world on one bad performances

but its the fact that he cant do it against the big teams consistently. the truly great players will deliver 99% of the time in big games. ronaldo doesnt

The biggest game of the season for United is this Tuesday. If your theory is correct then he'll play Nani or Park instead of the player of the year two years running.

Ronaldo has missed 4 PL games this season (3 of them were down to a suspension after the Pompey incident). Rooney has missed 10. Other than Wes Brown I can't think of a Man Utd player who has played more minutes this season.

I personally think he should have played his full strength side - which includes Ronaldo, Evra, Scholes and Tevez but Fergie knows a bit more than me when it comes to winning titles :D but if this gamble doesn't pay off Tuesday and Man Utd lose the league then Fergie has nobody else to blame but himself.

Just wondering why posts on this thread have all of the sudden ceased??

Could it be because of the embarrassment felt by those who worshipped Ronaldo that they're remaining silent??

Was he playing on Tuesday night???

True, had he actually had a good game you can bet people would be on here bleating about how this proves beyond any doubt that he is the greatest player in the world, it has become a consistant pattern that he goes missing in the big games and thus he will never really be the greatest player in the world. Kind of reminds me of Henry(except not as good), he was the best in the premiership for years but never really did it when it really counted like in the World cup or Champions League Final.

shakermaker1982

I didn't think he played that badly. He had a job to do and he did it. He didn't light up the game like Messi did but he has the chance to win a Champions League medal. If he plays well in the final does that mean you'll lay off him? Ronaldo can only do things when he has the ball. Considering how little of the ball Man Utd had in both legs I'm curious as to what you expected him to do?

Regarding Henry - I thought he was fantastic at Euro 2000 i.e. the competition they won. Is that a 'big' tournament?

Ronaldo has said he will review his future with United after Wednesday's game. That's him setting the wheels in motion for that move to Real that he's always wanted anyway. United supporting workmate reckons Fergie should drop him from the Final for saying that, but would that be cutting off your nose to spite your face? And that would surely lead to his exit anyway, so I doubt Fergie would do it

He's slimey. As much as david gill says they're not a selling club if Madrid offer 50m for him it will be accepted. Nearly every player has his price.

Indeed. I'd say ferguson has a backup though. Ronaldo is genuinely the first attacking superstar they've had that publically harboured ambitions to play for Real/Barca, so whiskey cheeks must have been planning on him being sold sooner or later. If they but Berbatov and get an ortodox right winger out of selling ronaldo I doubt if it will do much damage. as it is ronaldo's gash against the big boys. From what I've seen of course.

if he goes he goes. I'd like to see him stay but I wouldn't want a player on the books who isn't 100% committed to the club. He's renegotiating a new contract at the moment so it could be a ploy to get another 20k a week. I'd say you'd need a minimum of 50 million to purchase him.

I agree, as much as I want him to stay you can't force him to if he wants to move on. I don't like the timing of his statement though. It's the week of the biggest game of his life and he's thinking about such things as moving. One wonders if the lad is focused on the job at hand.

Focused on proving once again he's unable to perform on the big stage??

What a hero to come out in the week of the clubs biggest game in 9 years and say you're considering your future...........

What a terrible thing to say about someone like Ronaldo when you have guys like Lee Bowyer, Ben Thatcher, Micheal Brown and Joey Barton walking around. (Sorry about the last one, he's not walking anywhere is he.)

Does anyone realistically believe Ronaldo will perform well tonight?

If A. Cole is fit, Ronaldo will be invisible....although he might score a penalty he didn't win and afterwards we'll have everyone telling us he's better than sliced bread......

He's good enough to perform on the biggest stage. Remember Chelsea have doubled up on him every time they've gone up against him so I hope Man Utd try and counter that tactic tonight.

I've no doubt he has the talent - it's his character that I'd question in that if things aren't going well for him or the team he seems to sulk and drift out of the game

i dont ever recall ashley cole double up with someone against ronaldo, either playing for arsenal or chelsea.. every time he has played against ronaldo he has taken him to the cleaners.. as has gael clichy with arsenal this year..

i honestly cant believe there is still a football thread about this guy being the best in the world!!!

HA HA :D

I knew he was going to miss his penalty somehow ;)

I think Cech knew he would try one of his 'clever penalties' with a stuttered run up, waiting for him to go early, so he just stood his ground.

You could see Ronaldo thinking "Oh shyte" when he could see him still standing there.

Was playing well up till chelsea scored and then he got a bad kick from Essien on the stroke of halftime and surprise surprise he walked off shaking his head and looking fed up at halftime and he may as well have stayed in the dressing room for all he did in the 2nd half. I've said it before and I'll say it again He's class when things are going well but I wouldn't want him near my team in a backs to the wall battle

shakermaker1982
22/05/2008, 8:35 AM
Chelsea cut off his supply line in the 2nd half hence Man Utd's attacking players were not as effective as they were in the first half.

He played well, scored a great goal AND HE TURNED UP FOR A BIG GAME - much to the dismay of all his critics. He'll never win them all over but then again these are the kind of people that said England had 9 world class players at the last WC and would walk into any team.

Ronaldo will win the World Player of the Year award and absolutely, indisputably deserve it. 42 goals is a sensational achievement and is unlikely to ever be beaten by a player who has started I would say 60-70% of his games this year on the wing.

The boy's character, temperement, showing off etc would count against him if he didn't back it up, but he did. He scored the opening goal in the final, and a smashing header it was too. Fact is there is a massive amount of anti-EPL, anti-Man U and anti-Ronaldo sentiment influencing what people are saying here. Whether he is the best player in the world is a daft question, it can change every week. The question should be 'has he had the best season out of any player in the world' and I'm sorry, but with 42 goals, anyone saying otherwise this year isn't judging Ronaldo objectively and soley on his performances. Diving, whinging, showing off and generally being arrogant makes him a bit of a tw*t. Scoring 42 goals, largely from midfield, makes him the best player in the world this season. Man U would NEVER have won the league or the CL without him.

Personally I think that Messi has better close control and Kaka has unparallelled vision and appreciation of space, and either of these 3 could be next years phenomenon. This year though, Ronaldo wins.
