Drogs squad express fury over Dempsey exit

The players of Drogheda United football club have issued a statement voicing their concern over the manner of which midfielder Mark Dempsey has had his contract terminated with the club.

In an unusual scenario, the players through the Professional Footballers Association of Ireland website state that the player was dismissed unfairly and that he should be re-instated straight away.

The statement read: "The following is a statement issued to the Directors of Drogheda United Football Club by the players in support of Mark Dempsey. The players at Drogheda United Football Club are extremely concerned with the manner in which our colleague, Mark Dempsey had his contract terminated by the club.

"In light of the fact that Mark Dempsey is a full-time professional player and is now without a wage, we feel that he is entitled to proper notice and procedures, and we would request the club to reinstate Mark immediately and abide by the proper procedures. We will not rule out taking appropriate action to support our colleague Mark Dempsey."

Drogheda’s off-field financial problems have been well documented in recent weeks and with this latest bombshell being dropped on them, the could be involved in a lengthy legal battle.

Dempsey has been hampered by injury since joining the Drogs from Bohemians whom he was captain of until breaking his leg during the 2001-02 season. The former Gillingham, Leyton Orient, Shrewsbury and Bohemians midfielder has recently returned to action following a collapsed lung.

Why was he sacked? Would Drogheda have to pay off the rest of his contract or are they allowed to just throw him out?

My understanding is that it over his non-involvement in the club's FAS Course.
The board have remained silent all week only to say that the matter is now sub-judice.
