Delaney/Clark/Pearce is to the doc what Keogh is to TOWK. Alarmingly enough for the doc though, TOWK's overall logic is a little bit more sound.

Seems he has got better toward the end of his career, although at 32 he still has a few more miles left in him.
Given that he was never renown for pace, losing what he never had as he ages should not be a problem so he
could have quite a few good years left in him yet.
As I said earlier for what it is worth, he is our second best player on stats, and that would make him
out best central defender on stats.

His weakness is passing apparently, but unlike Malaysian pilots he is very good in the air :)

Why would someone pretend to be Sean St Ledger on a football forum? It's like a Beatles fan pretending to be Ringo Starr.

My tae's gone cold I'm wondering why I..
got out of bed at all
The morning rain clouds up my window..
and I can't see at all
And even if I could it'll all be gray,
but your picture on my wall
It reminds me, that Clarks really bad,
Yes, he's really bad..

Dear Sean, I wrote you but you still ain't calling
I left my mobile, my email, and my home phone at the bottom
I sent two letters back in autumn, you must not-a got 'em
There probably was a problem at Leicester post office or something
Sometimes I scribble addresses too sloppy when I jot 'em
but anyways; **** it, what's been up? Man how's your daughter?
My girlfriend's pregnant too, I'm bout to be a father
If I have a daughter, guess what I'ma call her?
I'ma name her Shauna
I read about Trapatoni too, I'm sorry
I had a manager get sacked over some games I didn't play in
I know you probably hear this everyday, but I'm your biggest fan
I even rate your games on loan at The Den
I got a room full of your posters and your pictures man
I like the **** you did with Boro too, that **** was fat
Anyways, I hope you get this man, hit me back,
just to chat, truly yours, your biggest fan

What might it be tricky, would you say ?

What might it be tricky, would you say ?

OK here we go:-

6th highest number of clearances per game (9.2)
16th highest number of interceptions per game (2.3)
27th highest number of offsides one. (0.5)

Those seem to be the key things, I imagine a lot of those clearances are headers, indeed :-

Strengths

Aerial Duels
Strong

Concentration
Strong

Ball interception
Strong

Weakness is passing but, but then in his position getting the ball clear is priority.

Damien Delaney's Style of Play

Likes to play long balls
Plays the ball off the ground often
Clears the ball out of defence often
Likes to tackle

Clearance and interceptions clearly are very important, defence into attack is very useful in getting results.

There you have it.

Delaney is clearly Dunne's heir apparent and it would make sense to partner him with a younger, technical player in the mould of Wilson or Clark. If O'Shea is getting into the team on name alone then there could be a vacancy at left-back for him.

Honestly, I wouldn't mind any combination from Delaney, Wilson and Clark and/or the old dependables of O'Shea, St Ledger and Dunne but I think Delaney has to be in there because of his form this season.

Stuttgart88

Hard to disagree with that. He has been outstanding.

O'Shea has reacted well to being dropped against Spurs.

I agree, fair play to Damo.
It wasn't so long ago he was without a club, look at him now!

League form doesn't always mean your going to do it and cope at International level though.

I wish Damo well.

Problem is Delaney is 32, just 2 years younger than Dunne. However maybe he is the type of player who
gets better with age, he's gonna be brilliant when he hits 40!

Us Ireland supporters can get bogged down on age sometimes. Worst case scenario- he partners Wilson/Clark for the next year or 18 months and if he loses his place the other one from Wilson/Clark slots in. Both are playing PL football at the moment but Delaney appears to be coping better than both.

Our defensive options aren't bad at all, at present. If you take into account that Germany, Poland and Scotland are our sternest of opponents in qualification- Klose, Lewandowski and Fletcher. They can cause us hassle but remember how Dunne was able to get the better of an imperious Thierry Henry?

I'm only focused on the current campaign. If Delaney can keep this form going for the next 18 months then super.

TheOneWhoKnocks
20/04/2014, 1:23 PM
We can get a campaign out of Delaney. By the time Euro 2016 rolls around, he will still be younger than Dunne will be in September. 33 isn't too old for a defender and besides, players should be getting into teams and squads purely on merit now; something that didn't happen under the previous regime.

Delaney scored his first Premier League goal tonight in Palace's 3-3 draw with Liverpool; it was a deflected screamer from well outside the box that helped launch his club's amazing comeback in the last ten minutes.

Delaney's reward for a near faultless season at the back for 11th placed Crystal Palace is a place on the bench. Hangeland's reward for getting relegated with 19th placed Fulham is a place in the starting line-up. Palace conceded 48 goals last season. Fulham conceded 85 goals, more than any other team in the league.

according to the preview of the Arsenal game on Palace's site - http://www.cpfc.co.uk/news/article/preview-arsenal-v-crystal-palace-1830330.aspx - Delaney was a doubt for this game

Adrian Mariappa and Damien Delaney are both doubtful after missing the Eagles’ final pre-season friendly of the summer at FC Augsburg last weekend, while Jonny Williams is definitely ruled out with a thigh injury.

Whether Delaney was out due to a fitness concern or not, Hangeland has just gone and justified his presence with a debut goal to put Palace 1-0 up.

Was Hangeland at fault for the equaliser?

Completely, thankfully. He allowed Koscielny to easily get in front of him and into space where the Arsenal player was left free to head into the net (https://vine.co/v/M3KAv9wWVmJ). Hangeland was trailing behind marking nobody. Palace have defended quite well otherwise though.

The impression I got was Delaney was just back from injury so being on the bench shouldn't have been seen as some sort of snub.

Another look at the goal with the offside view paused, I am getting the hang of this twitter lark now!

Can anyone shed any light on why Delaney might have been excluded for the Gibraltar and Germany games? He clearly should still be in the squad based on current form, if not in the starting line-up. Is there bad blood between himself and Roy? They've had a few run-ins in the past when Roy was managing him, but you'd like to think such petty matters would be cast aside for the greater good and that they could have a professional working relationship. Does Roy doubt his mettle?

I doubt Roy has much control over selections. More likely the manager just isn't that sold on him.

How come Roy is the nr 1 suspect when searching for possible issues of discord in the camp? :)
Even if Delaney and Keane had their moments, he still was a regular first team player. It was Jewell who didn't have use for him.

Given O'Neill's club track record I'd have thought DD was edactyl the type of CB he likes. When did he last start - Turkey? Was he "excused" for the summer tour? Maybe he lost favour for missing the US tour for perceived flimsy reasons?

His ability to deputise at LB makes his omission especially strange.
