So, have any Foot.iers splashed out on an iPhone today?
(Sorry if theres another thread about it, couldnt see one)

I've no interest in getting one but was surprised to read that
the camera is low enough pixel and you cant forward texts
messages or receive picture messages!

I thought it was supposed to be the best thing since the sliced pan!

Pfft  Sliced pan is overrated. iPhone is way better - it does EVERYTHING! :D

iPhone only came out today? I'd wait for the 3G version. But it's a great piece of kit from what ive seen of it. But no video function and only a 2 megapixel camera whihch is pretty much standard these days....

no copy and paste functionality either and very little 3rd party app support

lads, this is all done on purpose, otherwise they wouldn;t be able to release a "second" version......things are always held back, so the hype takes over then people go "oh well, i cant do this and i cant do that", then markerting and advertising kicks in showing what can be done with the new release, and people buy it, and the same stuff happens over and over again.....how do you think they are still selling Ipods?!

PAURO: you have a habit of taking things literally :D He means it came out today in Ireland with supported network coverage from 02. OR at least Id say thats what he means....

Ive seen the phone and from a cool, wow aspect, its impressive, but I had a feeling practicallity could be a problem....

This official launch was a bit of a joke, anyone who wanted the phone already has it for months, unlocked it and is using it without any problems.

I saw them in the US for $400 on contract but they 50% more expensive here at E400 with E45 per month contract. Current ones are not 3G enabled so would be best to wait 6 months for that.

I use work mobile so not much chance of upgrade to iPhone.

Someone on Boards worked out that with the vastly overpriced 18 month contract, the actual cost of an iPhone is about €900. Of course that doesn't include overages, which are also vastly overpriced. For a subspec phone with just a couple of innovative features, you'd need to be an impressionable moron to buy one. So that's all the Mac fans anyway. :)

adamis it like a blackberry?

Yes and no. Blackberry's thing is that it does push-email; it pushes email out to you when it arrives. You can do that with the Treo with a siimple addon, but it's not for me. I pull mail down from my IMAP account as and when I need it; if people really need me, they can text. :)

It's very convenient being able to do mail on my mobile though, and being able to sync my contacts and calendar with my PIM. The qwerty keyboard is a boon too, I'll never buy a phone without one again.

Its virtually a mini laptop more than a phone.

The anti-mac stuff is overplayed, especially by nerdlingers.;)

The iphone in many ways is exactly like the rest of their products:
PROS
attractive design
small form factor
good screen
innovative user interface
easy setup

CONS
expensive
technology not as advanced as design
poor third party app development support
not scaleable

I own a Mac and wouldn't use any other OS at home but have stayed away from the Iphone to date. Maybe if the handset and contract prices were at the O2 UK level I may have bitten but I'll probably wait for a 3g release in the US and jailbreak it on my current network.

nerdlingers i love it.

Mac people are nerdlingers too, but they consider themselves innovative nerdlingers. Linux nerds are just depressed optimists, who moan at everything :) well everything except linux of course, cos if they dont like it they can change it :D

Proper nerds detest Apple because of the closed box architecture that won't let them solder a bigger widget on the side or fool around with the code themselves.

Apple get great product placements in tv, movies & celebrities which drives their sales. Every Hollywood type will be seen with an iPhone.

Every movie has someone typing from an Apple Mac laptop. I'm a Mac-ist, purely because I work in the printing industry. I wouldnt work on anything less. ;) Seriously though, if I was doing design work on a pc, I'd go mad. I dont know feck all about specs and stuff, but for reliability and speed, Mac is your only man. Oh and no viruses either. and they look great. :)

In the absence of a 3g iphone and with an upgrade due from my network, I was thinking of going for the N95 8gb. Anyone using one of these, they look the business. Particularly keen to try out the Slingmedia Symbian client for watching TV on it.

There's an old biker joke: how many scooterists does it take to change a light bulb? None, they just get the electrician to do it.
I'm sure some of these nerdy linux/pc types adapt that joke for mac users.
