Strugglers meet at St Colman’s

Cobh Ramblers and Athlone Town, with just three wins between them during the opening third of the season, meet at St Colman’s Park tonight seeking to commence a charge up the First Division table.

Ninth-placed Ramblers have scored just six times this season – a tally three less than both Athlone and Kilkenny City, who fill the bottom two places in the table.

However, Dave Hill’s side achieved a notable result in their final outing before the midsummer break almost three weeks ago, when they inflicted the first defeat of the season on leaders Finn Harps.

That result gave Cobh a real boost going into the break, and they will aim to build on that this evening.

Athlone manager Jimmy Greene strengthened his squad considerably during the break.

He signed ex-Dundalk and St Patrick’s Athletic striker Martin Reilly from Newry Town as well as former club keeper – and erstwhile Westmeath under-21 GAA netminder – Gary Connaughton. Both are in line to make their debuts tonight.

While Cobh’s best result of the season was undoubtedly the victory over Harps, the midlanders boast a scalp of their own – their only win of the campaign came against title hopefuls Bray Wanderers back in May.

However, they have scored just two goals in five outings since, and have lost their last three games, an unsatisfactory spell they will hope to bring to an end this evening.
