Pat fenlon was giving out mad in Ireland on Sunday that certain clubs are holding the league back and will have to be expelled
I know you hate Shels and everything they stand for Eannar , but he had a great point. I mean when clubs like City, Shels, Bohs, Pats, Longford are all trying to get full time set ups, and then you have pitful idiots like Monaghan, Ramblers, Dundalk etc who will not even try to even consider going anyway full time ever.
it would probably mean a 6 team league i know, but something drastic needs doing if our league is to take a serious step forward. I mean look at the IOS article a few weeks ago and a club chairman was quoted as saying something like "they cant tell me what to do with my club. I will be ignoring these UEFA guidelines".
Its attitudes like that which are killing any chance the Irish domestic game has.
Should have mentioned that there are some 1st Div clubs who are making an effort as well i spose.

A promotin/relegation system in Division 1, would lead to a big injection in competitiveness and increase the standard.
All Div 1 clubs deserve their place in the EL and with the right organisation and money could compete with the clubs in the Prem.
What Pat is saying is like an Italian or Spanish boss saying Irish clubs should be expelled from Europe.
I agree the only way forward is a pro club system.
What would you prefer - clubs to go full time a la Dwogs and end up bankrupt....
Going full time is unrealistic, and Shamrocks are showing it to be unnecessary (to a degree) at the moment....
If you lot can't do it with the crowds (you are so quick to tell us about) you are getting, and the financial strife Bohs are apparently in, full time to me seems unrealistic at the moment....
IMO the licensing can only be a good thing, but the way the FAI are trying to rush it through ahead of the deadline (to be the first league to get it), with no financial assistance (and little assistence of any kind) is a disgrace.....

Well said. It's completely naive to think that all 22 Clubs can afford to go full time given the size of the country ( population, and consequently attendances ). About 4 Full Time clubs is the Max given that is the number of European slots we have.
I think the 10 team league has already been a success in increasing the level of professionalism with the eL.
The average standard within the Premier has increased a lot with all games competitive & 1st division clubs have to become more professional to have any hope of getting promoted.
If you increase the standards at the top of the league that should filter down to the teams throughout the leagues.
There is no use in most in going fulltime without a professionally structured club & realistically maybe only half a dozen clubs can afford fulltime squads at the moment.
Hopefully the licencing scheme will ensure that minimum standards are required for teams to be promoted to the Premier. Not wanting to pick on Monaghan Utd but last time i was at Century Homes the facilities were of good junior club standard & the support was worse than junior club level.

Pat Fenlon does talk sh*t at times - de blues are not all full time and they are kicking ass the premier league. So how does he explain that one. A club is better to have a sound financial base than a team that it cant afford

nah its not that. I actually agree with most of what he said. He also reckons we should go back to a 12 or 14 team premier, that the 10 team one isn't working. Its just that felon's a whinging git thats all :)

Like a previous message says , Drogs have tried big time to go professional and fair play to them but it nearly got them expelled from the league, when 95% of income is reliant on gates there is no way the Eufa Licencing system can be implemented.
Talk of having only 6 EL teams is bull****, there will ne none, !!
Shels alone have to fork out a min Eur 200k to bring them up to scratch, will they find the money ? in 18 months !
Do people honestly think BOhs, Cork City , Pats, Lonford, Drogs
Derry etc.are any better off ?
The FAI are in charge of soccer in Ireland if a domestic league is to continue they must help domestic soccer teams with money and support not threats and using this Eufa directive to destroy
our national league.
tbh I'm not surprised at all that Tolka will take €200,000 to bring up to scratch - I think the place is a death trap...... If there was a fire or some kind of emergency there are only 2 exits from the place (similar problems in Turners Cross?)..... All clubs have to do a lot of work to bring them up to scratch, but actually I'd think that some of the smaller clubs like Longford will have the advantage - we have more room to carry out the necessary changes than a built up city location....

Not really, there are actually 4 exits in the Cross. The turnstiles, the gate at the far side of the shed by the Corner, the gate by the club shop and the gates at the St. Annes End.

I think we do need relegation/promotion to and from the first division.
We do need full-time teams (and city should be full-time) but that doesnt mean all teams have to go full-time. There is a place too for well-orgainised semi professional clubs as well. Relegation from the first division would help clubs become more competitive.
Kilkenny seem to be a well run team off-pitch for example (nice stadium, no talk of debts etc) but not so hot off it.
theres a place for everyone

I'd like to see a large body of people get through turnstiles going the wrong way when there's an emergency!
I'll believe it when I see it.
Sound like potential Hillsborough to anyone?

And what of Tolka?

Tolka has two main gate exits [not turnstiles], plus another three exits along the main stand side that can be used in an emergency. I believe, though I'm open to correction here, that there's also an exit behind the new stand.

There are no working turnstiles at the cross - they basically just doorways. Theres also plenty of space behind the St Annes end for people to congregate for a fire exvacuation or something.
The hot spot of the cross would probably be behind the stand cos theres little space for people to flee there.
btw what kind of emergency do grounds really have to cope for anyway?
