My bro lives in Scotland and he had some mates over here and they were watching The Premiership and they couldn't believe how much better and honest the analysts were and no joking they were both saying how they would try and get the RTÉ coverage on satellite because of the lameness of the BBC pundits.

Watching Bill last night ...and the lads actually, It once again struck me that they're a national treasure. Yes they're prone to self-parody at times and all that but nonetheless -they won't be truly appreciated til their gone and we've Conor Mac or someone trying to extract wisdom from Matt Holland, Kenny Cunningham and some celebrity in their own press release*.

I still believe that if seventeen months ago Cyprus V Ireland had been on RTE rather thav TV3 then Stan would've been sacked in the days after it -neither he nor the FAI able to withstand the pressure that started with Bill and the boys withering disection -made while theirs and the nations anger and disgust was raw and new.

*Celia Holman Lee? That C*** who presents the weather on TV3? a string of rugby players? current eurovision/you're a star finalist?

When the day comes it'll be dumbed down ...all the way down to Channel 5.

Is this the hero who laughs at everything Dunphy says, fails to point out his contradictions and with himself, Giles and Dunphy lead scurrilous campaigns against Charlton and McCarthy without contradiction for well over a decade.

Same old cr+p about the panelists being "honest". What does that mean? A clown spouts off the first thing that comes in to his head with no basis in logic and the host laughs as if it was the funniest thing he's heard in ages. The clown then says the total opposite the next week and the host laughs. Brilliant honesty.

After the Sheffield Utd vs Millsboro game last week on BBC, Hansen said that was totally forgettable. That's honesty. No total bullsh*t being spouted about the Italian game or congratulating Mutt and Jeff for their part in appointing Trappatoni.

Souness I like and is a decent pundit.

Agreed they are great entertainment and I for one will miss them when they are gone.
Not sure if the lads had enough sway to get Staunton fired after the Cyprus game but maybe its a good thing Staunton wasn't fired back then as it was unlikely we would have got anyone like Traps and would have had to settle for the best of whatever was available back then

If you want a decent presenter who actually know something about football and challenges the pundits comments, try Paul Dempsey from Setanta (and once of Sky) and who doesn't laugh inanely at every comment.

:eek:Seriously?! Dempsey is one of the worst out there, he knows nothing about football and even less about boxing. On top of which he has zero personality. I would be more inclined to think he was made walk the plank rather than jumped ship. I'd even put Linaker ahead of him in the presenter stakes.

Paul joined Setanta Sports in August 2006 and is currently presenting the Irish sports channel’s live Barclays Premiership, Champions League and UEFA Cup coverage. Paul capably leads the live on-air studio discussion on Setanta Sports and he certainly knows what he is talking about having played professional soccer in England, Ireland, France and Switzerland. He speaks French, German and Spanish.

I think that a slight step up from a advertising and pr executive. Okey dokey?

You're getting a bit *****ly there, is he a relative of yours or something? I wasn't aware that having played football automatically translates into the ability to present a television programme. So presumably you think someone like Alan Smith who has played the game at a higher level is correspondingly more insightful and interesting in his analysis of the game than Dempo and Billo put together?

I was responding to your comment that he knew nothing about football. Self-evidently he does and if you listen to his comments it is obvious he does and no, he's not a relative of mine  He certainly knows a lot more than laughing Mr. Okey Dokey which quite frankly wouldn't be hard.

That's true, laughing Okey Dokey (I like that name) plays his part in what is, generally speaking, the best punditry team on TV at the moment. It's not really his job to know the game inside out so I don't find his lack of a footballing backround to be a problem. Setanta is a poor man's Sky - style over substance being the order of the day, an approach which falls flat on its face due to the obvious lack of funds they have at their disposal compared to Murdoch and Co. Having said that, it's the place to be after a hard day's work when Mr. Boring Stubbly Face and AN Other footballing never-was are guaranteed to gently bore you into the land of nod.

I live in Belgium and I have all the irish channels (RTE1, RTE2, TV3 and TG4)

For the years that I lived in Brussels I really missed those types of shows but once we bought our own house in Flanders the first thing I installed was Satellite TV.

I love it!

If Gary Lineker or Keyes put on a English clapping hat, having listened to, not contradicted and even supported two panelists having a serious go at the English manager and his tactics, you would say "What a clown and hypocrite!" and I wouldn't disagree with you.

I was 11 during Italia 90 so prolly didn't even know the meaning of the word hypocrite at the time that the memory was formed, it's just that when ever I think about italia 90 I'll always remember Packie Gritting his teeth before hoofing the ball towards sheedy for the equaliser against England, George Hamilton's " Timofte against Bonner ....Yeh" and again Hamilton " A nation holds it's breath......We're There!" and then Bill O' with his "Big Green Clapping Hat" grinning and saying "Fantastic .....wasn't it"
A family friend will have slightly different memories though... we were watching the game in the Spa Hotel in Lucan and when Packie saved the Peno the place went mental (obviously) and during the Melee someone wearing stiletto heals jumped into the air and landed heal first on said family friends ankle(the stiletto went clean through the fleshy part of the ankle above the heel) she did eventually walk again after 4 operations

Therein lies the difference. The 3 of them were pi**ing on my dreams and did so for years, including the Mick Mc era. I had lived through years of failure and now, when we had at last qualified and doing well, RTE decided to employ a clown, an ex-pro who repreated himself as nauseum, both of whom just viciously slagged off the managers and a compere who never challenged their views and in fact encouraged them and whose sole contribution was to just laugh at the buffoon's jokes, all in the name of entertainment.

No contrary opinion was ever put in place and that's what was really annoying. No balance.

Plus ca change.

I was very critical of Staunton when he was Irish manager but still went mental when Kevin Doyle scored in Slovakia and scored at Croke Park. Does that make me a hypocrite.

Perhaps you're right! but then again considering the Midfield that Ireland had going to Italia 90 Maybe just Maybe (I know hindsight is great) with a different manager we could have utilised that World Class Midfield and World Class Center halves to really compete at the tournament and not just ride the wave of euphoria with the usual win lose or draw we'll have a great time attitude
I sometimes wonder if our much praised devil may care party reputation is actually counter-productive at times with Italia90 a case in point

I accept that the team cannot be beyond criticism but I don'taccept we had a "world class midfield" or "world class centre halves". We're inclined to hype up our own players. Some very good players, perhaps one world class, but also some terrible weakenesses in certain positions.

Anyway, to repeat my point, what got to me was there was NEVER anyone on the panel to put a contrary view. Giles/Dunphy sang off the same hymm sheets for years until Saipan and ONLY then did we see a real debate in the panel. And of course when Dunphy was contradicted by Giles, he totally turned on him and called him many pejorative names. We should have had that debate from 1988-2002. Instead we had Giles and Dunphy and O'H kicking off with the same negative stuff, week in, week out. It did my head in. It still does.

I was very critical of Staunton when he was Irish manager but still went mental when Kevin Doyle scored in Slovakia and scored at Croke Park. Does that make me a hypocrite.

I think it does if you were part of a campaign on national television against the manager week in, week out, and then appeared on TV with a stupid hat and said "Isn't this wonderful lads?" and ignored all the negative stuff you had said and promoted rather than sticking to your guns and then just return to the negativity the minute things go wrong again.
