Now we have an Italian as our manager in waiting, do you think us Irish should get behind the Azzurri in the European Championship finals?

Im personally going for Spain, though I wouldnt mind seeing the Italians lift the cup either!

Should we be supporting our world cup qualifying group opponents?

Portugal. One of my best friends is Portuguese and I like their style of football.

Edit: Actually shouldn't this be moved to World Football? Just realised now.

Just hoping for a decent tournament to be honest. I'd be more inclined to want to see teams fail. The two jokes that are the hosts, particularily those Hopp Schweiz bast*rds.
Some upsets would be nice.

I usually decide after the tournament starts. Tend to take a shine to some team based on the first few games, so it could be anyone really.

Probably Croatia, because they played excellent football against England, played the game the way it is meant to be played, and Slavan Bilic is a cool mofo. Would like to see Romania do well. I think Italy winning the torunament might be the best thing for us. After winning two torunaments in a row maybe they will lose their bite and suffer a hangover

Yeah, i'd follow that logic too. But anytime I start following Italy in a tournament they always seem to start diving and playacting and make me throw things at the tv, thus disliking them and shouting for the other team. They are a hard team to like. I always like ze Germans too though. And in any other match I will shout for the underdog.

Moving to World Football.

I've backed Spain and France. I know that's being very conservative but I can't choose between them. And I could afford to with my winnings on Trap. ;)

Cool Mofo's dont get fella pros sent off by diving like a girl, esp a legend like Blanc
But yeah Croatia certainly play good football
To be honest I wouldnt mind seeing Greece winning again:)
The Euros tend to be more entertaining than the World cup, well to me anyway, and way much more evenly balanced games

Holland. Hup Oranje!

My head says (in Basil Faulty lingo) "Ze Germans"... Always find it hard to look past them in any tournament. They just get the job done with no fuss.
But my heart says Spain but I fear they will choke again.:-(
Outside of that, just please god don't let France win it.

France and Italy have gone backwards from 2 years ago, Holland just don't seem to have had the players in recent years and Spain always disappoint.

If they can get a goalie sorted I think Portugal will be very hard to beat. 2-11 there is no one stronger

Meira - Andrade - Carvalho - Valente

-------------- Petit ----------------

--Ronaldo - Deco -- Maniche - Nani--

------------- Gomes ----------------

I'm not sure that's Portugal's preferred line up any more. I think Andrade, Maniche, Gomes and possibly Valente are now out of favour and new players have come in.

If Big Phil reckons he has better I'm sure he does, and if they can get a better line up than that, they will do well.

edit: had a quick check. Andrade and Maniche played in their last couple of qualifiers. Valente hasn't played in a while

The Euros are usually fantastic. Far superior to the World Cup. The last one was probably the poorest since 1980. All great tournos in between with 1984 and 2000 the best. And France won both.....

I have a weak spot for Portugal and Holland. I'd like to see Croatia do well because they try and play good football - Modric is a gem of a player. Should be an exciting tournamanent and very open.

Has Ricardo retired from internationals because I think he has been very good for them over the years. Even then surely they could fall back on Vitor Baia, whatever age he is now.

He isn't having a great season for Betis... Portugal have never been blessed for keepers anyway. Baia couldn't catch a cold... :D.
Portugal weren't too clever in qualifying either.

I can't believe the amount of people I've come across labeling Switzerland in the same bracket as Austria, and here being called a joke!

I got them at great odds to make the final before the group draw (odds not as genorous now because they have a decent enough group). I think they'll have a good tournament and surprise a lot of people.

I'm going over to watch all of Frances group games with a french mate of mine - and hopefully a few more games. I'd like themselves or Portugal to win it. I spent the whole summer of Euro '04 working at the tournament and made many portuguese friends. It would have been the party to end all parties had they won that tournament:(

Germany and Czech Rep for the final. So we all feel better that we were knocked out by the 2 best teams in Europe... Then we can get back Stan as it proves we were the third best team in Europe under him...

No team really stands out at the moment. I'd go for Spain on the basis that they have a lot of players on form at the moment (Fabregas, Villa etc). I know they always choke, but the law of averages has to come into play one of these tournaments and see them do at least moderately well.

The Germans and Italians are also decent bets and will probably at least make the semi-finals. I can't see either host getting beyond the quarter-finals but will be happy to be proven wrong as it's always good to see the hosts do well.

As for other tips, maybe France and Portugal, though honestly I think the Portuguese will rely too much on Ronaldo.

I don't really have any preference as to who wins just hoping for a good tournament.

I'll be following Greece. King Otto is the man. Hiddenk's teams are usually value so them too. Croatia and Holland too. Well, just about everyone really. You see, I love football! Roll on the new season - roll on the Euros!

Croatia, they play good football and the way they responded after having their national anthem booed in England was sweet
