View Full Version : Marc Vivien Foe
Marc Vivien Foe collapsed on the pitch earlier while playing for Cameroon in the confederstion Cup semi Vs Colombia. He has since died! This is a huge and horrible shock.
I just hope he didnt take an accidental elbow from anyone, otherwise the poor guy who did it will never forgive himself.
He is a loss to football.
RIP Marc.

From the BBC website -
Cameroon star Foe collapses and dies
Cameroon midfielder Marc-Vivien Foe has died after collapsing during an international match in France, world football's governing body Fifa has confirmed.
The 28-year-old fell to the ground unchallenged in the 72nd minute of a Confederations Cup semi-final against Colombia in Lyon.
He was treated on the pitch before being stretchered off and receiving further treatment, including mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and extra oxygen.
Foe spent last season on loan at English club Manchester City from French club Olympique Lyon and also played for RC Lens.
Medical staff are believed to have tried to restart his heart for 45 minutes but without success.
"This is a very sad day for football for Fifa and for the player's family, this is all we can say at the moment," said a FIFA spokesman.
"Given this situation neither coach Winfried Schaefer of Cameroon or Colombia's Francisco Maturana will be speaking to the media."
Cameroon won the match 1-0 but that will pale into insignificance after the news of Foe, who had played more than 60 games for his country.
An autopsy will be carried out to determine the cause of his death.
Foe played under manager Harry Redknapp while at West Ham.
Redknapp said: "You couldn't meet a nicer, more fantastic person than Marc Foe.
"He was a special boy - I just can't believe it."
France and Turkey were contesting the other final which took place after Cameroon's win and the match was preceded by the image of Foe on the stadium's big screen and a minute's silence.
And it happened in his own club's ground...

that's terrible, poor lad.
i don't really understand how it could happen without a challenge though, we're the paramedics on the scene fast enough?

Of course they were, they were only yards away from him.
I saw the footage of it happening. Basically he's standing in the centre circle and just collapses.

It sounds identical to a documnetary that was on channel 4 (i think) in recent months, about drug testing etc. and there were numerous cases in Italy were drug induced players would die hours/minutes after big games. A real eye opener as to what goes on behind the scenes. I am not saying anything like that went on in this case but it will undoubtedly raise a few eyebrows.

If he was going to drug himself up, I think he'd pick a bigger competition than the Confederations Cup...

It's shocking when it happens to someone who only a few months ago you were seing every week in the premiership, he had come off the back of a great season by all acounts, scored alot of goals, so this is a terrible terrible loss for football fans, and of course his family.
RIP.

I was watching the game on Eurosport when it happened.
It was shocking to see it. The poor guy .
Don't think anyone realised how serious it was.
Makes you wonder about our own medical backup in the el.
I hope every team has an ambulance at the ready. Surely this must be a rule, is it???? We have one every match day anyway.
RIP Marc. A terrible tragedy.

Was watching France v Turkey on Channel 5 in Scotland, and wondered why it was a sad day for football as the commentators kept saying. Then I heard. Shocked is not the word. Its a tragedy, no matter who you support, whether you're a major fan of football or part-time follower.
RIP Marc
Saw the footage this morning. He just fell. You can imagine opposition fans roaring to get up and stop acting....
They showed Cameroon players in tears and the french keeper crying throughout his game (he plays for lens I think)
Tragic stuff

Foe will have a stadium named in his honour and the headline of todays paper read, 'thinking of you' with a picture of the french players after they scored pointing skyward

very sad news , when you realise his wife and three chilren were a the match and that his youngest was born in april, a sad day.
Ditto with the mirror.
But at least it didnt go for any shock headlines a la Hillsborough.
I hope they play the confed cup final and Cameroon win (which i suspect they will) and dedicate the entire tournament to Foe.
Such a tragedy is terrible.
Seeing it on telly he fell like a sack of bricks.
And fair play to terry henry for his goal dedication last night.
RIP Marc.

Good picture in the paper of 5/6 French players standing around Henry all pointing to the sky...
Is it France and Cameroon in the final?
Should be an emotional affair...

Terrible news. Hes a great loss to the game. Seemed like a proper gentleman.
I think that they should name the confederations cup after him. I think that Blatter has already suggested this. It's a good idea.

Where did you hear that? The papers are saying that all they can say for sure is that it wasn't a stroke.

There's some things where it doesn't matter how quick you are on the scene, you don't have a chance of saving a person - I think 1 in 10 heart attacks are unavoidably fatal.
Rigobert Song is quoted as saying his last words before leaving the dressing room for to start the second half were "Boys, even if it means dying on the pitch, we must win this semi-final"...:( :(
it was on a european channel on digital. although now they are saying they are not sure what happened him
