All the above seem to be based on the Examiner's story.

Mick Wallace is rumoured to have offered money to help the appointment process but this money was supposedly offered before Trap's name came into the reckoning.

Maybe soccerc might be able to offer some sort of confirmation???

I really hope this is the case - the Reuters reports seem to emmanate from the Examiner article.

With the exception of The indo, all sources above say "according to the Examiner....", so really, thats one source, 8 times & the Indo.

Edit : The Indo's source is apparently the Examiner too, so thats one source 9 times.

Only seeing an incomplete thread title on the index page I thought this was going to be one of those speculative threads where the title is a statement followed by a question mark of which that some of the aspiring Herald editors on here have become fond. I was then going to ask for you to be banned.:D

Hope you're right.

Hopefully confirmation will come soon and we won't have to wait until Wednesday.

Trapattoni would be a good appointment for Ireland and with a solid nucleus of experience in the squad to build on, progress will happen.

Dont have a clue but its great at the Bohs games as it is just sung over and over and builds up a great atmosphere. I think a Greek side sing it too which is where the Bohs fans got it, I think, not 100 per cent sure.

I hope you will sing it this Friday night at Dalymount .

His Italy side during the Euro 2004 qualifiers was one of the worst Italian teams I've ever seen. I wouldn't be leaping for joy at this appointment.

Then again, the alternatives were limited and I've no doubt he'll do better than your last manager.

NeilMcD
11/02/2008, 12:47 PM
They won five and drew two and lost 1 to Wales away. and for 2002 they won six and drew two and lost none. So 1 defeat in both campaigns is not bad at all.

Not so sure about that. Our last manager was world class. The only way is down from there.

From Boys in Greeen website:

Brady included in Trap team

February 11, 2008

Former Ireland international Liam Brady is ready to take up a significant position in the new Republic of Ireland management team led by Italian veteran Giovanni Trapattoni.

Trapattoni is set to pen a four-year, €1.4m-per-annum deal later this week which would see him arrive as new Irish boss by the start of May.

And Brady, who was signed by Trapattoni when the Italian was Juventus boss in 1980, is set to take up a new General Manager role in the set-up.

It would see the 51-year-old Dubliner take on a position similar to that which Oliver Bierhoff, the former Germany striker, fills in the Germany national management team.

Brady is currently in charge of youth development at Barclays Premier League leaders Arsenal but would be expected to relinquish his duties in London to take up the Irish position.

John Delaney said on the news at lunchtime that an FAI meeting has been called for Wednesday at 4:30. This is to be followed by a press conference. I'm actually beginning to think we're going to get this guy. Every now and then though I have to remind myself that it's the FAI that we're dealing with. In these darker moments I have flashes of Delaney arriving at the press conference flanked by Howard Wilkinson and Steady Eddie McGoldrick as the new dream team.

I'm starting to get excited by this, but the process has brought us many false dawns so far so until I see Delaney announcing it then I'll believe it.

:D Know what you mean, I'm nearly afraid to post anything about this appointment in case it goes tits up.

As for Eddie, for the sheer joy on his face as he ran up to arrivals spraying champagne over all and sundry in 1993 after the Belfast match he'll always be a legend to me!!

Great story about Gentile here actually, probably an urban myth but funny nonetheless!

There are many humorous stories involving Gentile within the footballing world. One is that during the Ballon d'Or (European Footballer of the Year) awards ceremony in the late 1970s English centre forward Kevin Keegan was announced as the winner. As Keegan walked towards the host to collect his award he passed the seat where Gentile was sitting. As Keegan walked past Gentile is reported to have stuck out his foot and tripped up Keegan. As Keegan was getting to his feet Gentile reputedly whispered into his ear, "You wouldn't have won any award if I had been marking you".

Trap with Brady and Gentille is as good a management team as we could have hoped for and a lot better than we expected. Bring it on, we will be organised no doubt. What do they say you cant make a silk purse out of a sows ear, but we dont have a sows ear of a team and we dont expect a silk purse.

On that note I would be wary of offering him a 4 year contract. We were caught out with this with Staunton and ended up having to buy him out of his contract. Also, he is nearly 69 years of age which I think is an issue if they are thinking of offering a 4 year deal. A two year contract is enough. If both parties are happy to renegotiate after that time, then fine. Having said this, if he states that a four year deal is necessary in order for him to take the job, then I'd say ok, a four year deal it is.

ya exactly paulie, i think that he might be using that stance as barter alright. see him into his twilight years. Though he hasn't really done anything on the international scene he is prolly relishing the prospect of managing us. But the FAi should try to limit it to a 2 year contract and then afterwards if all goes well then renew it for another 2 years, instead of paying him off or anything like that if things dont go well.....

Well he has a few months to learn it, and if Brady has a place in the set up then he'll be able to help translate until his language improves. If Trapattoni and Gentile are both committed then they should be able to get their english to a decent level in a few months.

If it is Trappatoni, will the FAI-bashers on here accept that maybe, just maybe, they have gotten this right? Will they accept that if you f**k up, as they did with Stan, you should be allowed to learn from your mistakes? That success doesn't happen overnight. That the only 'farce' of the last three-four months has been the hysterical media coverage?

Or will we go down the route taken by those who push their own petty agendas (step forward Brian Kerr, Pat Dolan etc) and claim that the FAI have pulled off a real coup in spite of themselves? Suppose delusion is better than humble pie.

Yes, If Trappatoni is appointed, a tremendous job by the FAI and the selection panel.

Drinks on me at Don Givens' house Friday night...details to follow.

And to be fair, the press can claim some credit for this, because the FAI were afraid to put a foot wrong! another assistant coach from Walsall was never going to hack it..........................

On the other hand, if Venables gets the job, all the above is a pile of horse sh!te !!!! How easily the pendulum doth swing !

I have just heard the news, sounds great.
It's not quite a dream team just yet.
A dream team would have Gentile running the u21's as well.

Good scoop for the Examiner, no ifs or reliable sources say, just an affirmative statement that the appointment is fact.

Delaney pretty much confirming that Trap has the job:

"I was thrilled last night. I got a phone call from Don Givens and I spoke to him this morning and he asked that I call a board meeting for Wednesday at 4.30pm. There is a preferred candidate to be the next Irish manager, that will be brought to the board and we will hold a press conference after the board meeting to tell the public who the next Irish manager is going to be.

"The panel have had a couple of interviews over the last couple of days. We're not going to comment who was where and when, but what I am excited about is that we do have the preferred candidate and the Irish public will know the next Irish manager on Wednesday night.

"I can't comment on who the manager is going to be and I think you understand that it's got to go to the board first. We've had a huge amount of interest in the job, I think that's fair to say, there's been an unprecedented amount of interest in who wants to manage Ireland this time.

"I put that down to two facts: 1) the number of young players that have come through over the last couple of years, there's a real knowledge internationally of the players that we have and 2) the financial package. The fact that we are prepared to pay more than we have ever paid to get a top class manager in. Those two factors have created a buzz around the appointment of the next Irish manager and from a personal point of view I'm just thrilled that we'll have somebody to announce to the Irish public."

When asked if he was brushing up on his Italian, the Waterford man said he'd be "brushing up on a lot of things, but that the Irish public would be excited about the appointment come Wednesday night."

Looks certain now. I would aslo like to see Gentile running the u/21's. I will be very surprised if Trap isn't pulling the strings of all the under age teams.
