View Full Version : Cardinal is accused of abuse files cover-up
THE Catholic hierarchy was plunged into crisis last night as two of the country's senior prelates clashed over the publication of confidential Church files.
Archbishop of Dublin Cardinal Desmond Connell yesterday secured a temporary injunction preventing a State inquiry from examining files relating to his handling of complaints against paedophile priests.
The unprecedented move could undermine Archbishop Diarmuid Martin's policy of open access to Church files.

Archbishop Martin should be commended for his actions. O'Connell is a disgrace. Whats he trying to hide?

I would suspect that O'Connell is very closed church, never happened, God will cry in his approach. What impression I get of him indirectly is supercillious and divine right of bishops. Martin seems to be more open and has come across as accepting of the failings of the church, and, more importantly, seeing the need to seek forgiveness and reconciliation. He does seem to want to tackle the past. That won't sit easy with a man who may have been happy to neglect to deal properly with problems when he was in the post.
He must be trying to hide some very incriminating information.
The church in general has got very lightly with sweetheart deal with the State for compensation.

He promised full co-operation a few years ago.
Why the change. On the face of it, he has given the impression he has something to hide.

The press story seems to be that back in the 80s, prior to the entire abuse story breaking, the Church knew about the allegations emerging but went to insure themselves against future lawsuits before they went to the public. Basically they are accused of protecting their assets before they protected the children in their care.
Apparently O'Connell said he received legal advice that he needed to this but won't say why. I presume not to incriminate himself or the church?
