Williams wins May gong

Shelbourne goalkeeper Steve Williams has been named the eircom/Soccer Writers Player of the Month for May following a series of sparkling performances between the posts for the current Premier Division leaders.

Shels stormed clear at the summit of the league during May, but have been on a downward spiral in recent weeks, during which time they have seen their lead at the top cut from five points to just one by Dublin rivals Shamrock Rovers.

Pat Fenlon’s Shels went through May unbeaten, winning two and drawing two of their four games in the Premier Division.

And Williams was at the forefront of their success, keeping clean sheets against UCD, Rovers and Cork City to help the Tolka Park Reds clear at the top of the table.

Indeed, in the meeting with Cork at Turners Cross, Shels only claimed a point by virtue of the Welshman’s last-minute save from John O’Flynn’s penalty.
