I thought O'Hara wasn't elegible because he hadnt declared for Ireland before turning 21? Will someone please clear this up once and for all?
Typical Givens statement though. Now it'll be more awkward for O'Hara if he does want to declare for Ireland.

Andy O'Brien has gotten grief
I remember O'Brien saying he only played for England in a non competitive game because he would still be able to play for Ireland.

The reason is that Givens looked at him before he was 21 now that he is 21 he cant play for us.

I never realised his parents were from Wicklow, i was under the impression it was just a single grandparent that was Irish. Being second generation Irish myself, I find it a little surprising that someone with two Irish parents would show such little enthusium to play for Ireland. Each to thier own i suppose.

And Stephen Ireland said he didnt want to be considered for selection so it is up to him to make himself available for selection, do you honestly believe it is good for any team's spirt to have a primadonna deciding when he will and wont play. Yes welcome him back but only when he makes the first move and im still waiting for him to repay the cost of his private jet, to see his grannies.

Trapatoni for manager with Brady his assistant being groomed to take over would be an ideal appointment and if the three amigos pull this one off, i wonder how many journalists will accept that they have done an excellent job, mind you with the FAI in charge Stan could get the job back yet!

That is one of the biggest steaming piles i have read on here. There is no way you can describe Don Givens as that and not expect a backlash :(

givens is a w**ker who has too much to say about people/things he knows little about. he uses his position to promote his ego. he loves people talking about him- which is why he often has pops at players through the media. this isn't a once off "Kevin Keegan" moment, I recall a Stokes incident recently too.
he has no right to be involved with any of the ireland teams at any age level because he has proved that he cannot deal with players in a proffessional manner- especially young players.
Who was it he was giving out about at one stage saying "that player is only interested in his money and fast cars, he should put more effort in" and the player respond two days later in another article saying "the guy is nuts, i dont even have a driving licence"
Givens is a clown of the highest order. You cannot defend the indefensible. For the good of Irish football we need to get shot of this fool.

I think Givens has had a taste of the centre stage and he's beginning to like it....he's a pig ignorant, ego centric excuse for a manager....I'm surprised that more players haven't made themselves unavailable to him given some of his more ridiculous outbursts...If we haven't got a manager for the next friendl they should take Noel King from the womens team and make him caretaker, at least he's beginning to get results

Givens was centre stage all over Europe in Oct 71? after scoring a hattrick v. Soviet Union in Dalyer in the biggest shock of the year, Liam Bradys debut and John Giles the manager!!:D:D

If that happens I will invite everyone to come join my RFAI, the Real Football Association of Ireland. We will be a seperate, dissident group with the true ideals of improving football in the country and representing ourselves on the international stage with dignity and pride rather than pandering to the enemies - the money men and the junket crew. We will force the imposters out of the country and declare our independance. Stand together, men.

Anyone else get the feeling that Givens is delaying the selection of the new manager so that he gets the honour of managing the team against Brazil??
IMO Don Givens' vanity has already prevented the new manager from deciding fixtures and having an extra game to prepare his squad.
The game against Brazil has not caught the imagination of the fans as much as it should have because of this debacle.
He is alienating players like Stephen Ireland and Clinton Morrison by not selecting them.
He is embarassing himself by shooting his mouth off in the press.
And his U21 record is abysmal.
Time for him to go? Should he get the same reaction that Stan got in his last game in Croke Park.
Congratulations to Don and the Amigoes for securing a World Class manager and ignoring all the muppets clamouring for an early appointment regardless of who.
Now we can look forward to a real chance of qualification for South Africa. Trap shuld work wonders with McShane and help him progress to the same level as Dunne and build a mean defence similar to the Charlton Era.

Unfortunately, he probably won't have enough time with the players in training to do this. Hopefully he'll be able to make a few small suggestions though.

If this does happen, I personally would suggest that it has nothing to do with Don Givens and his bunch of hapless joyriders.
If indeed it WAS the team of three who discovered Trapattoni (and not a stealth approach from the FAI itself) , They no doubt stumbled across him when desperately searching for an alternative to Venables.
If the FAI hadnt instigated this ridiculous 'interview committe' farce to begin with, someone with a business head could have approached Trap in December with the appropriate package and saved the country & the association an enormous amount of embarassment.
They are, to a man, buffoons. Whether they get lucky or not with their eventual appointment is irrelevant.

So you dont really know who approached Trap but either way Givens & Co are buffoons??
IF the FAI said last December they were delaying the appointment till May, they would have been slaughtered in the Press. Trap has never not honoured a contract in his fine career and I doubt if he would have done so for us last december so to say he was available them is pure bull****
Typical Irish begrudger, sure it was probably Trap who rang Delaney to get the job:rolleyes:

Yeah, but we know Givens went to the press before the Brazil game and laughed off the idea of getting Trap, basically said he had no plans to talk to him, but would be interviewing Billy Davies by the end of the week. I think it's safe to say Givens had nothing to do with this appointment, and frankly looking at his record as U-21 manager, and the way in which he conducts his business, buffoon is too nice a word for him.

So Givens should have said yes we are meeting Trap, and sure all you journalists can come along and monitor the talks.
Givens has kept his cards very close to his chest and done the job he was given, which was to deliver a top manager. I doubt if his job description included briefing the press daily and not ot use third parties to make contact with potential candidates.
As regards his U21 record, yes it's crap but has nothing to do with this appointment.

Fair comment, but it's my opinion of someone who wont give someone credit for a job well done. The job description was to deliver a top manager and alls fair in love and war, and that's what was delivered. So what if he used Liam Brady or any other 3rd party to help find the right man. Surely that was just what he was asked to do.

ever see the episode of the Simpsons where there's a core meltdown in the Nuclear plant, Homer closes his eyes, recites 'eenie meenie miney moe' and presses the right button purely by chance.... still, he hit the right button, so that makes him a hero.

I realise that some may be under the impression that Im 'anti-ireland' in some way. Nothing could be further for the truth. For what it's worth, the appointment of Trapattoni, if confirmed, will be one of the best things to happen to Irish football in a long long time.
I do intensely dislike Don Givens, as I believe he is tactically naive and appears more self important than his limited abilities should allow, and I dislike John Delaney for several hundred reasons. However , that's neither here nor there.
Amongst the main reasons for my constant harping on are :
Lie #1 : A 'world class' management team : It was an FAI employee, an unemployed pensioner, and a telly pundit thrown in two weeks after kick off for the recognition factor.
Lie #2 : John Delaney will have no involvement : Well, Paul Jewell can put the spike on THAT one, for a start...Rumours abound his fingerprints are on the Trapattoni negotitions as well. The man's a coward, and was afraid of being personally linked with another failure, hence no direct approach with the right attitude and attractive financial package, to a competent manager.
Lying is second nature to this man, and by extention, this organisation. If it was to be the 3 man committee charged with locating a manager, it should have been the three man committee. As it stands now, we are expected to admire the "cute hoors" who managed to snare Trap in some sort of bizarre 'black-ops' mission, while the 3 man panel were busily wasting our ticket money on hotel rooms & 'extensive research' on managers who seemingly had as much chance of ever getting the job as I did.
What about the managers, both old hands and young bucks who were made sit through this farce? The very fact that it had to happen at all is bad enough (I've covered the Headhunting versus interview panel subject elsewhere) but when Trap leaves (lets face it, at 69, it's not likely to be another 10 year charlton era) who will take the job if his assistants decline, I mean, once they see how the FAI is run, would they really want to stay?
When the vacancy arrives again Will anyone dare sit through another FAI "interview"? or would they be wary of being an unwitting accomplice to another incompetent FAI smokescreen?
If it's Trapattoni, They got the right man, and finally we have reason to be cheerful, but I can not go so far as to say that John Delaney deserves any personal congratulations, even though he was practically inviting as much when interviewed by T'OD.
I say this because his ineptitude, two-facedness and downright cowardice regarding approaching the right man led to us surreptitiously aquiring a manager by fair means of foul while our money was being wasted on what turned out to be pointless series of "interviews" conducted by clueless patsys. See here for an example of the all knowing committee's depth of knowledge on the Trapattoni situation (http://www.independent.ie/sport/soccer/fai-official-approached-trapattoni-1279643.html)
Finding Trap was fortuitous. I'll be very pleased if it works, but it was a fortuitous accident.
We've had that kind of thing before, and congratulations should not be forthcoming in their aftermath....If a Football team only barely manages to fluke it's way to victory in what should be a walk in the park, you dont say "congratulations on a hard fought 94th minute 2-1 win over San Marino, lads. Job well done". You fúcking roast them, because they got out of jail by the skin of their teeth, and if they'd stuck to their original gameplan, even THAT would never have happened, frankly we expect more from professionals.

To be fair we have never had a failed English manager. Our last three were Irish and the one before didn't come as a failed English manager. Dunphy and Giles wanted a second rate English manager but thankfully Givens and his buddies held out for something better.

I think you should look at Jewels record and Charltons record. Not much difference really. However one is failed to you and the other isn't. Before you jump in I am talking about Charltons record pre Ireland.
In relation to Mc Carthy, he was a failed Irish manager in the lower English leagues. Kerr was a successful Irish manger at LOI and Youth Level and Staunton was never even a manager.
The bar has been raised. Of the 3 above the only one I agreed with at the time was Kerr. Mc Carthy turned out in the end to be a decent manager and Staunton was a farce.

I'd agree with all of that actually.
As the person who started the thread, I'll be big enough to say FAIr play to Givens for this appointment. A truly world class appointment and Givens had a lot to do with it.
But, I still think his handling of certain players during his time as interim boss of the senior team was wrong. His record at U21 level is atrocious and should no longer hold that post IMO. I don't think Trappatoni is going to sack the man that hired him however, and I don't think Delaney will sack him either. Maybe the best option would be to give him an upstairs job.

That's not actually the case, he was inexperienced but he'd previously qualified Millwall for the old Division one play off's and had them in and around the top of the league when he left, the went to pieces after he left that season although they'd been on a bad run from when he was linked with the Ireland job. I don't see how his record pre Ireland could be considered a failure in the lower leagues...
