I was always a big fan of Peter Cushing. I'm not sure how many of his movies have him wringing his hands while delivering some variation on "I must continue my important work" or "I must continue the research" ...but I'd wager it's more than a few.

Getting through my Hitchcock collection atm and James Stewart holds a lot of the lesser films together.
I love his drawl.

In no particular order - solid actors, not necessarily movie stars.

Bruce Willis, Billy Bob Thornton, George Clooney, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Daniel Day-Lewis, Russell Crowe

Cate Blanchett (best female actor), Nicole Kidman, Naomi Watts and Susan Sarandon (token non-aussie) :p

If you at some former nominees & even winners of the Oscars you would be surprised how many poor actors on the list.

Best actress - Gong Li. Her best performance - Raise the Red Lantern (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/raise_the_red_lantern/)

I love Gong Li, brill actress, and quite good looking too. Funny that in China she is very unpopular. Not sure why really, might be cause she is so popular in the west

As for the thread
I love Jack Nick, and his best and my fav movie of all time is One Flew Over The Cukkoos Nest

Hoffman, Day Lewis, Fonda, De Niro, Pacino........etc, etc....= Greatness

Why do so many people think Denzel Washington is a good actor?

Only Training Day & Malcolm X stand out from his Body of work (http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000243/). Maybe he has done well at the box office but no stand out performances.

Just about all the actors mentioned so far I also like

Harry Dean Staunton
Tommy Lee Jones
The recent release "In the valley of Elah" with Susan Sarodon, Charlize Theron and Jason Patric. There's no fault with the film, its more a play than film and more to do with trying to figure out the conflict America is in at the moment. I won't tell you the ending but here's the screenplay
http://wip.warnerbros.com/inthevalleyofelah/

and a couple of actors that joined the day-to-day regular cops
Vincent D'Onofrio
Gary Sinise - he starred and directed a version of "Of Mice and Men" with John Malkovich.

Two dead actors I like Peter Lorre and JT Walsh.

My women's list would include
Anna Paquin (NZ) especially Buffalo Soliders

Billy Bob Thornton. The first films I saw him in he playedfvery diverse characters. I didn't realise it was him in some of them.

Slingblade, ( his own creation)
A simple Plan
U-Turn
The Man Who Wasn't There - was the first film I was able to pinpoint what he actually looked like.

Good film alright, though I found the ending a bit weak. Paddy Considine also gives a superb performance in 24 Hour Party people, playing the late Rob Gretton, manager of Joy Division/New Order. If you've seen the real Gretton you'l know how uncannily spot on the portrayal is.

On actors in general, Daniel Day Lewis is the business. Philip Seymour Hoffman is close behind at this stage.

Good call. This guy freaks me out. I reckon he was on the Ira war council or something. I honestly reckon I'd brick it passing him on the street.

Also up to this I've seen Bruce Willis and Billy Bob Thornton. Eh what?

I've actually met the chap, I fitted Carpets in his gaff many moons ago .He's not as scary in real life i can assure you, Although he counts Some Mothers Son as the most important film he's ever been in so maybe your theory has some foundation:D

His episode of Father Ted further fuels the theory that he's either a truely great actor or he's nuts.

Philip Seymour Hoffman and Daniel Day Lewis are probably the best actors to emerge since the 70's golden days of Hoffman, De Niro and Pacino. Personal favourite is Philip Seymour Hoffman, with his role in Love Liza standing as one my favourite performances and movies since the turn of the century.

I think Leonardo DiCaprio has come along nicely as an actor, even taking into account the Titanic and Beach blips. His early work in Basketball Diaries,What's Eating Gilbert Grape and This Boy's Life were fantastic for someone his age, and recently he has showed he's maturing well in the Departed and the Avator
