Whats your favourite sporting film of all time?
For me its This Sporting life, one of Richard Harris's best performances. A beautiful piece of filmaking, particularly the action shots, something that is very easy to do badly. I cant think of another film that captures whats its like to be at the bottom of a ruck (or equivelant).
Whats your favourite sporting film...

Any Given Sunday - Mainly for that speech.
Every film that has featured football has been total rubbish. 100%
Raging Bull is a superb film.

Hoop Dreams - given I have no interest in basketball whatsoever, the fact that I was couldn't take my eyes off it is testament to its quality.
I think the fact that it was a documentary was the reason.
It seems to me that it is very hard to recreate on the big screen what makes sport so special. The only other sports film I really loved was When We Were Kings, another documentary.
Hoop Dreams is probably the best documentary I've ever seen.

Dodge, if you have eight hours or so to spare, you need to see Shoah (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/shoah/). Depressing obviously, but uplifting at times. All others pale in comparison.

If Ron Howard didn't make such a soppy film of Cinderella Man, it possibly would have been the best sports film. The Book is amazing. For me i'd pick Raging Bull.
Still haven't seen Any Given Sunday or that much talked about speech.

Either Friday Night Lights, which is an film about high school american football
or Shaolin Soccer, where a team of ex shaolin monks learn to play football to defeat Team Evil

It's ridiculous, moronic, garbled slapstick.
And it's very very funny. :D

Denzel is a class actor and makes most movies he's in that bit better imo.
for comedy Id say The replacements, Keanu Reeves and Rhys Ifans, I loved that film.

Stone does a good job conveying the intensity and depth sport offers and the fact that a game is more than just a game.
Best : Any Given Sunday
Worst : Escape to Victory (obviously)
Recommended : Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait and The Arsenal Stadium Mystery

First time i've ever seen that speech and to be honest it's good but it's not great. Maybe i need to see the film to that point to get the full power of it?

My 4 year old also makes me watch High School Musical with the true to life state B Ball final that gets stopped with a couple of minutes to go so Zac can sing with Vanessa at the audation for the school play which was brought forward by Miss Darvis to clash with the game (and the brain competiton which Vanissa was in which was stopped at the same time by a bad chemical leak) which they both just missed but sang anyway to everyone who had left the game and got the part and went back and won the brain competition as well as Zac scoring the winning basket in the last second to win the game. I dont really like it :o
Next week we will go through high school musical 2 where Ryan would rather dance than play baseball (or so I'm told )

Aye twas very good.
Helmut Rahn was an exceptional player and often forgotten. Ten goals in the World Cup which at the time was only bettered by Fontaine and Kocsis.

I didn't think of it the first time I saw this thread but Kingpin is also a great sport-related film.
Another documentary type: Murderball.

When we were Kings
Have to say I've a childhood sentimental liking of Escape to Victory. The plot is preposterous but I remember being so proud that Kevin O'Callaghan featured in the movie and was gutted for him that he broke his leg :D
Sylvestor Stallone in goal, the Ardiles flick and the Pele overhead kick at the end. What more do ye want!!!! :)

Remember the Titans was awful. Had the potential to be a brilliant hard-hitting movie (given the setting) but declined so quickly into typical American sentimentalism that I wish I hadn't wasted my time watching the second half of the film cause I knew full-well how it would end...
Anyway "Major League" would be the best imho...;)

When we were kings getting one mention is a disgrace, superb all the way through.
If you want to see the funniest sports film ever, look up Slap Shot. Paul Newman is in it, and its p*ss-your-pants-funny.
Reggie Dunlop: You know, your son looks like a fag to me.
Anita McCambridge: I beg your pardon?
Reggie Dunlop: You better get re-married again, or he's gonna have someone's c*ck in his mouth before you can say Jack Robinson.
