View Full Version : Cork players on strike.
Are sure ollie we're loaded down here kid,we must be paying our players loads of dosh cause for the last few years we're winning everything:D
Well since no one knows what Frank earns I'd say all the cash is used to pay himself;)
I could be wrong but I don't think Billy made any money managing Cork.
I wasn't suggesting he did.

would you pass a picket line if you had to play or work with the same people who were on strike i for one wouldn't,we don't care too much for scabs down here
Picket line? Work? Scabs? Is it a coal mine ye have down there now? Sure doesn't sound much like an amatuer sporting organisation.
Then again ...nor does not allowing proposals to be put to the players in a secret ballot. The more I'm hearing about this the more I get the impression this isn't about player power -it's about particular-clique-within-the-players-ranks-power.
I don't understand this at all.
County Board approve changes - i believe this a democratic vote by the clubs themselves.
Players moan & threaten strike.
County has another vote & approves.
Players begin strike.
As said above this an amateur sports body where apparently no one gets paid as we all know expenses always genuine. How can you picket a sports body? Its not like any one losing a livelihood.
If they give into the players then what happens next year if they don't like the manager appointed?
I would guess the GPA are involved in the background. What is the point of a players union if they don't have a cause to fight for?

If the players are right (i don't think they are) then they should keep striking if they believe in what they are doing. Then come Sept/Oct they can seek nomination to the board of their club and then act as a delegate of the club to the county board, or even can seek nomination to the county board.

Why did they not lobby the clubs before the 2nd vote? Did their own clubs vote?

Pete, this is from an earlier post and is as reported in both local Cork and national press:
In October the clubs voted to remove the right of team managers to pick their own selectors. 4 weeks later the hurlers and football issued their first statement expressing their dissatisfaction. Gerald McCarthy asked for the clubs to be given the chance to vote again. The players wrote to every club outlining their case and asking for support to change the system that had been voted for in October. A week later, on 20 November, 112 clubs delegates voted again by a majority of over 2 to 1 to retain the system they had voted for in October.

Cheers. Seems fairly clear cut democratic decision.

If the proposal put forward by the Cork County Board had been accepted, they would not need to go through that process as one of the clauses was that a players' representative be appointed on the county committee (Board), with full speaking rights.
