George O'Callaghan looks set for a return to Cork after being given clearance to pursue a career away from Portman Road.

The 28-year-old midfielder has been told he can leave the Club on a free transfer and the Eircom side look favourite to land their former player.

George spent five years at his hometown club, making more than 150 appearances and helping Cork into Europe, becoming a favourite with the home fans along the way.

He arrived at Town at the start of last season and eventually signed a contract in January after illness restricted his progress during a trial period.

But George has not been able to hold down a regular place in the side, making just 12 appearances and has now been told he can move on.

"George is a great lad but he's 28 now and needs to be playing regular first-team football," Town boss Jim Magilton told the Club website.

"We have not been able to give him that here and we won't stand in his way of moving on now."
