Intending to purchase a few new albums that have been recommended recently but thought the Music forum could act as a second opinion.
Perhaps this thread could be used as a sounding board as to whether you are about to purchase a classic or a dud.
I understand a lot of music is personal taste but some concensus can be useful.
Would you recommend the following albums?
Black Francis - Bluefinger
Grinderman - Grinderman
British Sea Power - Do you like Rock Music?

Yes to Bluefinger.
Yes to the other two. Grinderman I got and like. BSP I plan on getting, and came highly recommended on other fora.

Yea, I haven't heard BSP but a mate says they are top. They're a band i'd buy if i saw an album.
They have a massive cult following as far as I know.
Anyone heard much of The Futureheads, have their first album, they're playing in Sligo at the end of the month. They come recommended live...

Get Bluefinger if you like in any way Black Francis / Frank Black.
If you don't yet like him, get it and you soon will. :P

We'll all be listening to The Specials again soon! Can't wait.
Edit: Actually I couldn't wait, I've got Ghost Town on right now. All this hardship talk is making me feel young again!

Well (if remotely interested):
Got Grinderman and British Sea Power at lunchtime - Black Francis was Out of Stock :( . I'll pick it up again.
I got the Yeah Yeah Yeah's - "Show Your Bones" instead.
Heard a lot of their singles but Is this album any good?
Anyone heard much of The Futureheads, have their first album, they're playing in Sligo at the end of the month. They come recommended live...
Futureheads are fantastic, and even better live I'm told, though I missed a chance to see them for myself some time ago.
Second album is a more tuneful affair, the spiky, jerky, pointy guitar riffage this time dripping with harmony and melody like some over-exuberant honeycomb. A bit like that. :)
I most definitely would. Go.

Enjoy it, they're a good band and she has a superb voice. fever to tell is a good one too.
Has anyone got anything good to say about New Young Pony Club?
I have only good things to say about NYPC. The album is great. Similar in ways to CSS.

excellent. I'll have to make a purchase.
Has anyone watched the Channel 6 late at night. They usually have music on, usually with the Doherty wan. In fairness the music is decent, and has picked up where No Disco left off. Check it out anyway. Very good at promoting new Irish bands.

Great Band. Both albums are very good. You can pick up the better 1st album in Zavvi for €6 if you like Only1.
Can't wait for next Thursday!:D

Slanted and Enchanted - Pavement
Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain - Pavement
Teenager of the Year - Frank Black
Pinkerton - Weezer
Songs from A+E - Spiritualised

Songs in A+E is something I should pick up myself, so would also be interested in feedback.

Thanks for that, Noby.
Being whimsical for a minute - Puchasing a dud album is one of life's little aggravations.
That said, taking a chance on what turns out to be a pleasant surprise can be worth the gamble. This is a very rare occurance I've found, however.

I'd definitely recommend Pinkerton, Weezer's finest IMO.

Yes, yes, yes to both Pavement LPs, particularly Slanted And Enchanted as it's my favourite. In fact, go for the hat-trick and get Wowee Zowee as well.
Weezer I know little about, and Frank Black is one of my many blind spots too. In fact.....
Songs In A+E I would guardedly recommend, actually maybe not even that much. If you've not got any Spiritualized you'd be far better going for Ladies & Gentlemen We Are Floating In Space and/or Lazer Guided Melodies instead. And Pure Phase!
Haven't any of the Fannies albums after Thirteen so can't comment on the last one.

For me SFNB is the pick of the post-Bandwagonesque albums (although I heven't got the last couple)
Thanks for that, Noby.

Oh it's many a time I've purchased on a whim, with varied results. I don't have that album because my general purchasing has taken a nose dive the last year, and when I do it's more likely that I would get something that I previously had on tape rather than something new.
Still do it a bit too, not as much as before mind.
Christ, some of the sh!te I've picked up over the years on various whims! :D
Worst thing though is hearing a couple of singles, liking them enough to buy the album, and then finding out there's eight or nine other very good reasons that they were the two singles. :D

Teenager of the Year - Frank Black
Not his best solo album if you include the stuff with the Catholics but still a good buy. The first half of the album is fantastic stuff, the second half less so. Still worth it though for that first half. If you like the Pixies then you'll love it. I always thought his pre-Catholics solo albums could really just have been Pixies albums - especially the self titled 'Frank Black'.

Deal on all of them, except maybe Frank Black as I don't know that album.
Songs From Northern Britain is by far and away my favourite Teenage Fanclub album, some cracking tunes on there, Songs From A+E was one of the better records of last year, Pavement are Pavement and Pinkerton is a fantastic little pop album. All worthy purchases

Yes, Yes, yes. Highly recommended. Though personally, Grand Prix is my favourite Fanclub album.
My top recommendation would be another Scotish band though, Trash Can Sinatras. Sublime, melodic pop music. (Might be a bit laid back for some tastes, but I love it) Weightlifting and I've Seen Everything are wonderful albums. My favourite band.(And they've a new album in April, :D) Check out their new single, Oranges & Apples on Youtube (along with some of their older stuff.)

Thanks for all of the feedback, folks. I may well just get them all for the 2nd year running!!!
I've neglected buying up the Pavement albums for years - Brighten the Corners is the only one I owned - so I'm really looking forward to finally emersing myself in "Slanted", "Crooked" and "Wowee Zowee".
Am I over romanticising my late teens or was the very early 90's a great time for music?

I agree - most of my favourite bands came from in and around that time. Faith No More, Pearl Jam, Nirvana (at the time), Wilco, Pavement and Whigfield.

must say i don't go back to the stuff i liked from early 90s too often with the exception of pavement and In Utero. and verve! remember early verve! chr!st they could do no wrong back in the early star-gazer days. gravity grave, blue, she's a superstar, man called sun, good good stuff!

Maybe but it was a great time. Mondays, Roses, Charlatans, Blur, Ride, Flowered Up! EMF, Jesus Jones, Inspiral Carpets, My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain (I know they'd been around for a while but I love Honey's Dead), Dinosaur Junior, Pavement, Sonic Youth, Suede, Pulp...
Early to mid nineties was the greatest era ever as far as music is concerned IMO. Why? Because you had all that great stuff and you could still listen to the great stuff from the past. What a time to be a teenager!

Story folks - terrible pre match tension.
Anyhoo - would appreciate some feedback as to whether you'd rate the following as I'm considering pick up this lot soon:
Who's Next? - The Who
Murmur - R.E.M
Disraeli Gears - Cream
Exile on Mainstreet - The Rolling Stones
My Way - Ian Brown

Yes in a big way to this. REMs first few albums are outstanding, though they've gone off the boil for a good many years now. Murmur is fabulous, as is Fables of the Reconstruction, probably my favourite REM album.
Exile on main steet - my favourite album of all time. 18 tracks, no duds. A work of staggering genius.Buy, buy , buy !!:)

DEFINITELY pick up Who's Next and Exile. The former contains about four of the greatest hard rocking tunes of all time (Bargain, Baba, WGFA, Behind Blue Eyes) as well as a few other great songs that are a tad mellower. Exile, like Davey said, is genius and contains no duds. I actually had it on last night until about half way through the CD started skipping. :(
Murmur's also class, although I haven't listened to it in ages. Radio Free Europe and Pilgrimage are great, great songs.
My random recommendation: Pere Ubu - The Modern Dance. I've only been able to play it once so far but it's brilliant. It's hard to accurately describe it but it's like Captain Beefheart's Magic Band turning punk.

Listened to Murmur for the first time in years, just a great album. My Way is class, his best solo work.

While watching "I'm in a Rock N' Roll Band" (BBC2, Sat 8th May) it featured 70's band "Dr Feelgood" and guitarist Wilco Johnson.
They sounded great - spiky riffs, high adrenaline, the band were as tight as the preverbial crabs arse at 50 fathoms.
Going to take a punt on their first 2 albums - "Down by the Jetty" and "Malpractice".
Anyone heard them and are they worth a shot?
