I'm off to Berlin in Febuary with two other lads.

I've never been before.

Has anyone got any advice on good places to go/see or good things to do?

Was looking at some various sites on the net but where do you start?

Am looking for the same thing , going to give Montenegro a miss hope to spend a few days in Berlin after the Georgia match . Need to find somewhere to watch the match as well.

I went last year before the world cup and I have to say the people are first rate, very friendly and will always go out of theirm way to help. Same as they were in Stuttgart and Cologne I suppose.

I'd recommend the Pergamon museum, the reichstag/dome, the zoo (not just for the polar bears) and you have to go see the reconstructed checkpoint charlie - even if the museum is a bit of a let down. I managed to buy a few bits of the berlin wall from there which I thought was pretty cool. Then again it could be any piece of debris :)

It's a very strange city - very cold and bland looking in parts (especially the eastern side of the city) but on the other side of things you have Potsdamer Platz which impressed me greatly. Well worth having a few beers in there. I went out to the Olympic stadium as well and they were doing tours but it was in german only so I just ended up having a look round. I stayed in an ibis which was reasonable priced and in a good location.

Go and see Hertha Berlin if they're at home (They play Frankfurt on the 2nd, Bielefeld on the 16th, Duisburg on he 29th).

The Pergammon Museum

Go on the beer in Kreuzberg.

Have a wander around the food hall in the KaDeWe department store..

Which Ibis Shaker ?

Suitehotel Berlin Potsdamer Platz, actually it's an Accor hotel (just checked my hotmail account) but I think they might be same company. I paid 77 euro's a night. Clean, good location and a huge room. Not 5 star but for the money you couldn't go wrong.

Went there last year for a stag weekend, take the tour of the WW2 bunkers, retrofitted for the Cold War. Fascinating stuff.
Boat tour of the city is well worth it too.
We stayed in the Radisson, it has the mother of all fishtanks in the middle of the hotel!

Stayed at the Mercure Checkpoint Charlie bit pricey but worth it if you want to spoil yourself. about 5 mins walk from CC and 10 mins from Brandenburg Gate (Stadmitte nearest U bahn)

Checkpoint Charlie - story is on the hoarding around the area, didnt feel the need to go to the museum *

Topography of Terror - 5 min walk from CC, open air exhibition detailing rise etc of the Nazi's - very interesting*

* both these are open air which is very nice in 24 deg C sunshine not sure I would spend as much time if it was wet/cold

Flat Tire bike tour - E20 for 3+ hours well worth it for an overview of Berlin . Next time I will probably just hire the bikes and see the recomendations of DaveyCakes and Shakermaker etc

Was there last weekend at Metallica after Montenegro.

Stayed at Holiday Inn Express Centre €99 p/night for a twin. Cheap, clean, new and continental breakfast included. Bus outside 2 stops to Potsdamer Platz or about 5 stops to Brandenburg Gates. Nearest S-Bahn 5 min walk. Small local pubs in all directions from hotel, some with darts and some with smoking inside and appears to be open till last customer drops. We left a pub across from the hotel called the "Smokers lounge" at 3:45am and was still serving.

Did drinking all on East side, prefered it. West side much posher. Huge City, lots to see and do. Cabs anywhere in the city are great - none of us got ripped off at any time so gave up quickly on the public transport. Tegel to Berlin about €20. Easyjet airport to Berlin about €40.

Ah what a city, great place!

If you get the chance go! Treptow Park, Tiergarten, Mitte, and walking along the Spree are all great. Potsdam is nice for a break and there is great history everywhere you go in the city.

went last tuesday to friday. great city.
we stayed in a hostel in the east of the city. the Sbahn stop was landsberger allee. it was miles out of the city centre and took 40mins and 2 trains to get in to the city.
loads to see an do. saw reichstag, brandenburg gate, did mueseum of the stasi HQ (was crap as most of the itsm were in german), as mentioned above checkpoint charlie was great (the writing on the hoarding was very interesting), topography of terrors was excellent also. did teh ddf meuseum.
everything was so cheap. loved the little food shops in the train stations. the prices were dirt cheap. you wouldnt get that here.
saw alot but would go back to see more!!!
