Sporting Fingal replace Kilkenny City
18/01/2008 - 14:52:47
Sporting Fingal have been offered Kilkenny City's place in the eircom First Division.
The Cats resigned from the League this lunchtime, citing financial difficulties and lack of support.
The new Dublin outfit, managed by Liam Buckley, are due to play in the new A championship this year.
When I heard the news, I actually felt physicall sick. As someone from Thurles when I finally made the dicision to support league of Ireland, I had to make the choise of which team to throw my lot in with. Living between the two closest clubs Limerick and Kilkenny twas a tough choise with the former winning out. Must have been a premonition or something that I didn't go for Kilkenny. It really is an awful shame, and then to hear that their being replaced by another Dublin club is all the more sickening.

I don't know, choosing Limerick may not result in a long-term love affair with the LOI either! :p

...What, there are no ex-Cats in the States no? Shame to see clubs disappearing, it is horrific that it can happen so easily.
How exactly were Sporting Fingal selected - was anyone else given the choice?

When the new clubs applied for the A league, they were assessed by an IAG. Sporting Fingal had the highest score, so they got first refusal.

Sad news for Kilkenny.
It's also a pity to see soccer concentrated more in Dublin, but fair play to Fingal.
What happened to Thurles Town when they left the league a number of years back?

Changed their name to Thurles Sarsfields and handed their grounds over to the GAA
Quite a facility they had too:

Can't really give you the history of it but that's where they are now .
They got promoted last year and look good money to go up again this year .
They play out of the Greyhound Stadium , , and last year they were actually 2 divisions below the top team in(from the North Tipp League)Thurlas , Cormackstown(okay just outside Thurlas) .
Thurles Town FC(that was in the Eircom League) was actually an amalgamation of Peake Villa and Thurles AFC . I'm not sure but I think the current club was formed after the split , with Peake Villa going back to what they were and Thurles Town FC replacing the old Thurles AFC .

Peake Villa would prob be considered the top team in Thurles now and play in the higher standard of South Tipp League.
Thurles were due to re-enter LOI at the same time as Newcastlewest and St Jmaes Gate under the title of Sporting Club Thurles! However this was vetoed, I think in the belief that it would damage junior football in Tipp

I thought they didn't get in 'cos it was more of an idea for a club than a reality
