The Football Association of Ireland have launched an internal investigation after it emerged that Under 21 captain Liam Miller should not have played against Albania on Friday night because he was ineligible.

Miller picked up two bookings against Russia and Albania in the European Under 21 Championship qualifiers and was automatically suspended for last Friday's match. However, neither the player, Under 21 management or FAI were aware of the suspension and Miller was selected for the game.

UEFA notified the FAI of the situation on Sunday and they will meet in the coming days to decide on a punishment against the Under 21 team. Under UEFA's rules, teams guilty of fielding an ineligible player can be credited with a 3-0 defeat with the three points and goals going to the opposing team, but, UEFA have yet to meet to decide what sanctions they will place against Ireland.

"The FAI has written to UEFA acknowledging and apologising for the error. We have indicated to UEFA that under no circumstances would we play a squad member knowingly aware of a yellow-card position and that this case was a result of communications and human error.

"We must now await UEFA's decision on the matter while the player is question will not line out against Georgia (on Tuesday) at the request of UEFA."

Givens admitted that Celtic midfielder Miller was not aware of his bookings and that the Association were investigating what happened. The Association are also putting in place a new system to track suspensions.

"To be honest, I don't think UEFA would have got it wrong," he said. "We are now looking to see where the error happened.

"It's disappointing because we got a good result and now we have to pick ourselves up for our next game against Georgia on Tuesday."
