Kilkenny City picked up their first win of the season when they saw off Athlone Town by two goals to one at Buckley Park.

In a disappointing game, Kilkenny were marginally the better side with goals from Ian Barry and Michael Comerford giving the home side the victory.

Tommy Lynch's team have been unlucky on several occasions this season and the manager insisted that if they could start games as strongly as they finish them, they would climb the table. And they proved their manager right as Barry put them in front after just three minutes when he slotted home Jim Whelan's cross.

Athlone equalised through Mick Collins in the 29th minute but Kilkenny were not to be stopped as Comerford headed home a Joe Watson corner six minutes before half time.

Teams:
Kilkenny City: Fitzpatrick, Maher, Whelan, Mark Andrews, Tobin, Dunphy, Watson, Niall Andrews, Barry, Wood, Comerford.
Subs: Murphy for Watson (68 mins), Quilty for Barry (85 mins).

Athlone Town: Moran, O'Brien, Kelly, Hope, Jackson, Holt, Rush, Harney, Mullan, Kelly, Collins.

Where were McCann and Shine for this game?

Also, what about Eric Molloy; is he still injured?

McCann is in the States for a week, and Molloy has a broken bone in his foot, should be out for six weeks.
