Monaghan United's Aaron McCarey started in goals for the Republic of Ireland Under 16's team in the first game of a two legged friendly against France. Aaron travelled to France with the Republic Team at the weekend and stepped between the posts on Tuesday night. France came out 3-0 victors in this match having been awarded a penalty 2 minutes before half time. Aaron was unable to stop the penalty and France went in 1-0 up at the break.

In a hard fought second half, with Ireland performing well, Aaron was unlucky to concede a further 2 goals allowing the French a flattering scoreline.

The Republic of Ireland play France again on Thursday night. At time of writing no details of the team have been announced but Monaghan United will be hoping that their 15 year old goalkeeping star in the making will be given a chance to avenge Tuesday's result.

Aaron travels to Aston Villa for a week's training when his international duty ends this weekend. Good luck Aaron.

Monaghan United's Aaron McCarey sat this game out on the bench as Vinny Butler's Under 16's managed a 0-0 draw in the last game of the 2 game friendly last night in France.

The trip to France will undoubtably have been a great learning experience for Aaron and he now has his week long stay at Aston Villa to look forward to.

Well done Aaron on making the Irish team and starting on Tuesday and good luck next week at Villa.

A great young lad who is a total credit to his family. Am always proud to know the kid and think that he has a bright future ahead. He has 6 clubs across the water looking for him. Hope he makes the right choice. I think he turns 16 in January and will then head over to his new life. Great loss for Mons but we will always be proud of him.

True! I wonder if when he takes over from Given in a few years he will mention about his time sitting in the senior dressing room at Mons eL games?
