I never liked the song, now I completely hate it. One of the 10 most annoying things about Christmas.

Despise the song to be honest.
Gets played too often and when its played in a niteclub it causes a cattle
like stampede of women trying to get on the dance floor to sing along to it.

Funny Christmas song story was 2 years ago at our work Christmas Party.
It was a big formal meal with all the trimmings, and as the main courses
were being brought out what was being softly played in the background???

Band Aid - Feed The World :D

Thats awful :p

Love the song, never one to rush for the floor to sing to it, usually rushin to the bar if it means the night is almost over.
Great song though

Dont mind the song but i hate when it comes on in a pub or club as the fat smelly ****ed up idiot beside you takes his cue to put his arm around you and start swaying shouting out the words and spitting all over your face.

Some might find it an honour to be serenaded by the writer of the song.

Whingers.
It's class.
The best Christmas songs have a separate story going on.
A la Last Christmas.
Another classic.
Stop whingeing.

God help us it could have been a lot worse, remember Ronan Keating recorded a cover but due to popular outcry never released it.Great song in its time but so overplayed.Maybe we should have a best Xmas song thread instead.

Every year, when I first used to hear it I'd think - "ah yes, thats a good song" but within 48 hours I'd hear it 48 times and I was sick of it,still weeks short of Christmas.

I doctored the words on it last year and put it on the Christmas post on foot.ie as The Fairytale of Old Cork.

Great song and, like other great Christmas songs like Merry Christmas Everybody by Slade, the fact that it's actually surprisingly difficult to play/perform generally stops every tosspot with a six string or who used be in a boyband from dragging it through a hedge backwards. The odd one slips through but they usually just utterly disgrace themselves. I know Ronan Keating fans who turn away in disgust at the mention of his and Dearbhlas version. Proper order too.

One of my favourite facts about the actual recording of 'Fairytale...' is that the whole intro thing with the piano and Shane on his own was an afterthought. It was recorded in a completely different session, different studio etc... to the "rest" of the song which originally started at the point where the whole band join in. They literally taped two different two-inch reels together (no Adobe Audition, Audacity, Cubase, Pro-tools etc back in them days).

It's a good song which has been overplayed so it kinda loses a bit of its special appeal , My favourite bit is the extended instrumental at the end for some reason , I think its wonderful

Great song. Its up to No. 8 in UK Charts. A Facebook group is getting behind it to make No. 1 this Christmas.

I hope it does. If only to stop the X-Factor gimp Leon making his jazzy bluesy sh!te making it.

On a related topic here on the BBC, (http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/7149525.stm) the song has been edited for BBC radio listeners. Some lyrics have been deemed too risque.

Check out the picture of McGowan. Priceless!

i thought for a while that mcgowan almost put it on some of the time. then i walked into the boogaloo one day during the summer for a couple of pint bottles, and he was fast asleep on the couch. woke up about 2 hours later and was completely incoherent ( or whats that word where ye cant make out in any shape or form what someone is saying.
